High Poly Modelling 01: Rules & WIP

Guide Lines

Get a photo of an environment, using the photo selected, select a prop/item to high poly model ONLY.
The size of the prop will vary from each competition that is done (small, medium and large (there is an image below that might help explain the sizing guide))
You will be aloud to keep using the same photograph for each competition (and it will be encouraged), allowing you to build up an environment scene.

This is a MEDIUM sized challenge.

Rules:

General Guidelines:
• You must be a registered member of Game-Artist.net in order to participate in the official tournament.
• You can use any 3D and/or sculpting software package to create your entry.
• Only 1 entry per person, Do not try to create multiple entries with different user names. If you do more than one then you must pick the one you want to submit for the competition.
• Everything must be made by 1 single person.
• HOWEVER you can use the same photograph and work as a team but each entry must still be modelled by only one person.
• The maximum size for every submission image is 1600 x 1600 (max 400k file size), please note the attachment system is broken you will need to use an image hosting site.
• This is a medium size challenge, to help make it fair/equal please do your best to stick to medium (or small) sized object/props.
• The photograph you select must be a photograph of an environment
• The prop/item you intend to model must be on the photograph you selected (however you are allowed to use other reference material to help you model the prop/item).
• You must show us the photo you intend to use.
• Please post all your work in progress (WIP) below as new posts.

Limitations:
• You have no restriction on the amounts of polygons you can use.
• For final submission NO Texturing or polypainting.
• The final image maybe either a screen shot or a render (you can use any shaders (except transparent shaders) and any render setting that you like).
• You do not have to show wire frames, but you may if you want.

Duration/ Deadline:

Because this is a new competition there is an extra week to allow people to come into the competition late.

Deadline: Monday 26th September, 23:59 GMT (3 weeks)

Sizing Guide:

Please post all your work in progress (WIP) below as new posts.

Here is a very quick example of WIP

Any questions just ask them in this thread as well.

Comp guidelines update: I will allow close up shot (providing you can see the whole object) of items/props that you intend to model as your required image.

If you do use a close up shot of the item or prop it would be nice if you add just a little bit in writing about the scene it would fit into, e.g. old western train station.
Or if you came across any environments images in your search for your object, that would fit into what you where thinking the scene would be (but doesn't have the object you intend to model in it) then please post that up.

Where possible I would prefer there to be more of a surrounding/environment (but i do accept it maybe hard to find the image).

Started on this immediately. However, i'm not sure if the object i've selected is of the correct size, is it?
But anyway, started on the base mesh which I am going to mosey over to zbrush later tonight.

Because it is about Highpoly modelling it should be obvious to have no textures on it.

Read again:
"• For final submission NO Texturing or polypainting."

@topic
Will there be a Lowpoly and textureing comp. after that?
Looking forward to your entries.

mafiadude1: The bridge is fine for the size. The base mesh looks solid too, keep it up.

Yep that pretty much it.

Sorry you can't use normal maps for this challenge.

EyecyArt: It will just be the High poly for this competition (so there will be no low poly modelling or texturing competition later).
Part of the idea is to encourage people to stick with the same photo (not required) and keep taking objects from that photo and hopefully they will come out of it with a full scene.
You may just want to build a few differnt props from differnt genres.

Sorry for the dumb question, the photo reference can be our choice correct?

After listening to "standing outside a broken telephone booth" by primitive radio gods, I decided to make this:

Im gonna make a lightpole next to it, and possibly a bus stop?

Thoughts?

EDIT: Does this count? or has it been done before???

That sounds like a great idea, TonyD! You don't see phone booths that often these days. However, you should probably just stick with the phone booth for now, and add the other elements after you complete the contest. You only have two weeks, and you can put alot of love into this one high poly model.

Here is my idea an old luggage wagon, couldn't find any shots of them in a larger scene but ultimately I want to create a smallish old fashioned train station scene

Is that right? Just want to make sure I've got the brief right
