Blender Game Engine competition
Hi there,
Some of you might be interested in entering this Blender GE competition. Game Engine/Competitions/2008 Q4 - BlenderWiki As you may know, Blender is a free open-source 3D modelling app, with a built in game engine. There are currently Euro500 worth of prizes, under 3 categories. As most of you will be artists with possibly no coding experience, the No Coding category might be of interest - otherwise, partnering with a Blender GE coder might be worth considering. If you have used Blender before, you might have used the built-in Game Engine ( just press P to Play ). If you haven't, here's a tutorial for Artists to make a simple game ( there's no coding involved, so it's ideal if you want to learn how to make interactive content without any of the boring stuff ) BSoD/Introduction to the Game Engine - BlenderWiki The deadline is mid-March. Hopefully some of you will take this opportunity to try out the latest version of Blender for modelling, and hopefully even go as far as making a game for the competition. The best of luck! Mal |

The Blender game engine is actually not that bad, and with a bit of optimization, it could really stand beside other far more expensive ones.
In a related note, the new open source game for Blender was just released: Yo Frankie! - Apricot Open Game Project » Download Yo Frankie! It's called Yo-Frankie. |

This is a cool video showing the Yo Frankie game running within the Blender game engine. Cool competition but I have to learn more about Blender Game Engine before I enter a competition like that. Anyways I hope lots of other people enter. I will be interested in looking at the submissions. Also is it possible to enter the competition with a team? According to what I read i believe you can.

Hi ak21,
> Also is it possible to enter the competition with a team? Yep, you can enter with as many people as you like, but of course you'll have to then carve up the prize. It would definitely make sense to partner with a coder, or even a 3D artist who understands the Blender logic blocks to visually create interactivity, so that you can both produce a better final result. There is now also another Blender related competition, which might be of interest to any artist here wanting to work alone ( ie no programmers involved ), by re-using existing assets to make new levels. You can read about it, and the prizes, here... Yo Frankie - Level Competition at BlenderNation Best regards... Mal |

Just a quick prompt for anyone wanting to enter the competition - the deadline for submission is the 16th of March, with an additional month to tweak / polish etc.
Here are some links to videos of Blender GE games so far. Thump Stuff blender game WIP on Vimeo DukDuk2 WIP3 on Vimeo BumperDerby Showoff v1.0 on Vimeo Note that there aren't a lot of entries for the "No Python" section - this could be ideal for artist to enter ( no coding required, just some use of the built-in visual logic system to control the scene - in the first page, there is a tutorial showing how to use it ). Best regards... Mal |

There are some great ( and free ) templates for games that you can use also, so that as a 3D artist you can start placing your models within an environment, press P ( the Play key for starting Blenders built-in Games Engine ), and seeing your content live.
Here's a cool 3rd person platformer one, with support for a LOT of features such as moving platforms, jumping etc... Third person adventure - Template v.01 - Blender Artists Forums Someone has started a FPS here... Simpler FPS Template - Blender Artists Forums If you're new to Blender, I'd recommend downloading the 3rd person .blend file ( after downloading the latest version of Blender from blender.org - Home of course ), opening it up, and pressing P.
