Thanks for the replies guys! It's cool to talk to people have a lot of experience with this.

As for the image i posted, it was never intended to be game art. I woke up one morning and after my friends left I was bored, so something came over me to draw the Joker on paint. It's unfinished and still sloppy, but good enough to get the "Wow you drew that on PAINT!?" from my friends, which is all I really wanted at the time. It was before I had the idea of art as a career.

As for photoshop and other programs, I don't know when I'll be able to get my hands on them. I need to get a job, probably over this winter, so we'll see. Can I get the discount even if I'm not taking an art class and haven't taken art throughout high school? lol

(before the "get in art class!" comments, already signed up for next year)

Yep, you've just got to be a student and have some way to prove it (school ID, something like that), this is where I've gotten most of the stuff I use. I'm not sure if they only do the US but there are probably international equivalents.

It's a good idea to use free programs or trial versions for a little while to make sure you really want to do it. Even with the discount they are a large investment. I used Blender for about six months before dropping money on maya.

I've spent the majority of today getting familiar with Blender.

I can now do some basic shapes, lighting, subsurfing, and just finished making terrain with a hightmap and then further customizing it.

I'm finding that the hardest part for me right now is learning the interface and the tools used to shape and create things, so I think I'll do what you did and explore Blender extensively before upgrading to Maya.

It's a little frustrating having to learn all this basic stuff, but at the same time fun and rewarding, if that makes any sense? hah

Just getting myself to start reading a book on Photoshop was a bit annoying - felt like school again but once I got the hang of it, it became fun. Now the frustrating part is finding and developing my own style while self-teaching, not to mention comparing mine to higher grade work. But hey, I know that once I get close to professional quality I know I'm close to getting 'good."

Im sure you've probably already made up your mind about this one, but heres the truth, as per the way I see it..

talent = bullshit

the difference between a "natural" aka someone with talent and your everyday joe is practice... you work your ass off long enough and you'll get to where you need to be...

The only way nature factors into it is the duration it takes you to get where you need to be... so if you got the determination, do it, it may take a while though... then again, it just might click... best wishes... don't quit.

i agree, motivation is the key here. as long as you don't get bored and keep doing stuff, you'll also keep improving rather quickly.
