Game-Art - Does it pay good?

The question is simple.
Does an artist job pay good? Both freelancers and people that work on companies (missing the name.
Thank you

It depends.

It depends on who your clients are and how good your skills are, both are and project management (freelance), and it depends on what your studio position is, who you work for and where (in-house/studio).

RSArt.co.uk - How much should I be earning? should give you a good idea.

Last time i checked, you'll not get very rich doing game art, unless you're very skilled, and working for the right studio. IMO the only way to do this job is when you're passionate about it. If you're doing it for the money then you're in the wrong business.

Just my opinion of course...

Hmm doesn't that pertain to practically all other art-related fields? The way I see it, there are legions of people who draw and paint as a hobby, some of whom might decide to get into an art career. Couple that with others who switch to game art from other art fields and you're just a pinprick in a bucket of competition. Here's an article that might be helpful..

Video Game Salary

But I'm hoping that as long as you're decent and show potential, someone would pick you up, heck even for an unpaid internship or something.

The sentence that gets me from the link of biomanz is, "A game artist that can last in the business for over six years ..."
Now, I'd imagine that you get better at what you do through experience. You make friends, and build networking, I don't quite understand this sentence.

Sorry that this is a bit off topic.

In general artists in the US and especially Canada are paid far more than their UK counterparts.

I work at a fairly big dev, and I have 11 years in games now and I earn circa $50k+
If I moved to the US I could command far far more..

Everyone has to start somewhere.
Don't be too driven by money and you will do ok.

You won't do badly if you're decent, but it's not the best paying job in the world.

Game art is definitely more a labour of love thing. It's not a job to get into if you're only after money or easy money.

Ofc that it isnt always about the money you make by something you like but lets say that the job is really demanding and you are not paid according to your value, would you still want to work there? Or would you look for another thing related to what do you like movies and advertising?
Give your personal experience here Would be awesome.

Btw sorry my english, I am foreigner and I can have a good english but writing its just... differente :P

When it comes down to it - are you earning enough to live comfortably and still save a bit? I'm a student and have lived off 16,000 odd (aus) a year for nearly 4 years and have still managed to save 3000 grand.

Of course people will have different definitions of "comfortable" and living on 16,000 is by no means as comfy as I was living at home but it is livable.
I can afford beer... and food so I've had no qualms!

I'd be over the moon with an entry level job in the industry earning 30,000 a year (aus)

usually in America if your good enough and have a higher education can land you a job making anywhere from 40-50k a year which is "respectable" for just starting out, i am driven by money :P but more driven by the fact that i love to 3d model, its a normal job...your not going to make fortunes but your going to make enough money to live comfortably and if your making like 20k a year then you need to find a new job or profession because you cannot support yourself on that

im hopefully going into directing as well later on in my life
