demo reel C&C !!!
hi , ived just finished a intensive course of 1year and half and made a demo reel in no time and didnt found a jod in the last month.
My idea now is to redo a demo because i really want to get in the game industry, so can you guy's tell me what to improve in my modeling , my texturing and to get the info to upgrade myself to a higher level in everyfield possible. My goal is to become a character artist and can someone tell me how i can make a pretty high definition video, bacause i saw a lot of video that's only weight about 30 meg and the quality is really good.(maybe flash?) plus im ready to pay to get better, so where can i go like school or online teaching formula to get better! thank's a lot! demo reel - xXBad_MofoXx (dont mind for the bad spelling im french) |

The fog during the video makes it quite hard to see the quality of the work to be honest. In the texturing part it looked like it could use a bit of a roughing up to make it look a bit less uniform and fake. The modeling itself looked pretty decent, but some shots of some wire frames would probably be good too with possibly rotating around them so they can see your usage of the ploy's.
Id say join all the competition's on this site for texturing and modeling you can to help practice. Also joining a Indie team can bring about a lot of experience that would be very valuable. With joining a indie team it will help you build up your portfolio and you will be able to show off some of your work with experience of working on a real game behind your belt. |

The content isn't too bad, but the presentation is letting it down;
There's a 30 second wait until we see any work. Pare that down to a screen with your name, and showreel title that's there for long enough to read it and then skip to the work. Ditch the scratches/dust effect because it's distracting from your work. The really thin, fancy western text compresses badly and is hard to read. I wouldn't try to put all 4 views of the model on the screen at once. It makes them a little too small. Try doing a spin around and then fading between the different views. The textures in the background are really tiny, too. Try putting them full res and panning past it in the background. You don't show wireframes for any other model than the first one. You don't show polycounts for anything. You don't show texture specs for anything. The "other models" are simply stills fading in and out, where turnarounds would show off the models better. I'd stop the showreel after the cars, too. You're best to only have your best work up there rather than all of your work. Only one model is textured. I wouldn't put anything up there unless it's fully textured (the exception being if it's a sculpt or a high poly model). And commenting on your own showreel with "WOW" and a +1 rating is... eh... cheap. |

I think some of the good points have been covered, but he's my feedback.
Firstly the length, it's way too long at nearly 2minutes, and it looks a little padded. If you cannot show some great stuff in the first 10secs then going on for 2 minutes ain't gonna make any difference. Reels should not really go for more than approx 1 minute, especially if you don't have much stuff to actually show. As time goes on, keep 2 reels, a short one you can send out quick and easy, then a longer one for the interview. Audio. The music is a fine piece, but I found it overpowering from the work you have shown. If you want to use audio, again keep it simple and low key. Get rid of any fancy logos of your name, unless its a small faint watermark to protect your reel. Keep you any text with name and contact details simple, white on black, with simple cuts or fades. Also have a written showreel breakdown of each sequence and piece you show. If you have borrowed some models for show off any rendering, or maybe you have worked on a project with other people, state clearly exactly what is your work, and what isn't. Also mention the software you used. Next, clarity on what it is you are applying for. If I got this reel, I wouldn't really be sure on what role you might want. It might appear obvious that its for a character modeller, but then there are some environments shown as well. There's clearly a fair amount of work gone into the backgrounds and environments, so many might assume env artist, or maybe general modeller. Don't assume the person looking at your reel will know what you want. Finally, and many people forget this. Your showreel is about you, its selling you, it has to say something about you. But be careful not to over do it. Your showreel does not have to contain fancy cuts or wipes, unless you want to be an video editor. Keep it neat, simple and well presented. Let your work do the talking. I've looked through reel after reel for hours and you have to stand out, but not for all the wrong reasons. |

The models weren't too bad although it's hard to properly judge them on a small compressed video, get a vimeo account if you want to upload a higher res movie.
Agree with everything talon suggested though, employers only really want to see a shaded/wireframe models with texture sheets and specs. Showreels are more suited for high res production art imo, a couple nicely presented jpegs would probably show off your work better. As for the actual movie, the music was seriously depressing lol and all that flickering was really quite annoying. I'd probably texture those cars, 2nd character and maybe that shotgun since they were your strongest pieces and scrap the rest. Btw, if you want some inspiration on a kick ass showreel, check this out Untitled-2 |

thanks a lot guy's, really appreciate it, thats the kind of stuff that i wanted to ear from a long time. I knew about the mod but dont know which mod to choose, from my point of view its better not to go over complexed with a mod idea because its gonna be easier to complete and patch after but every mod look so complicated, its seems that they never finish but that's my opinion!
the showreel you showed me is really kick ass , its nicely done and everything fits really well! thank's again and i will work hard on the point you told me! ![]() |
