I have to agree with what Dennispls said. While what you say laughing_bun is true, that is not accounting for the time and memory that has to be alloted to the artist to complete this task. Assuming this is a 2048, from watching his other pillar tutorial, just for the main concrete that's 4 1024's, 8 512's, etc. You can create 4 512 different re-usable tiling concrete textures, and 4 unique object textures (that can be re-used throughout a scene, or even a level) with just that one set (diff/norm/spec) of materials for the concrete. It's too generic of a scene/set of objects to have such unique materials to be plausible for a general game environment and schedule. There are definitely special cases where things like this need to be done but there are memory limitations that we have to abide by, not to mention milestones, that restricts us from being able to do this on every asset we create.

I do think that the final result looks real cool though and I'm sure there is some good info on there that people can learn from.

Yeah, I should buy those in the long run, and if I like this one as well, of course.

I have the pillar tutorial. I thought it was a great video. All I need to do now is actually follow the tutorial and make something good.

Ok now, I finally got my hands on it.

And I must say that I am very impressed by this!
I didn't finished watching yet, but it's amazing the PS shortcuts and small tricks I've learnt with it so far.
This is by far, the most complete env art tutorial I've ever watched, I now classify this a must have to all the env artists out there, even professionals will learn a lot from this!

I have bought a few and will be buying more as well. Great DVDs for sure. He does talk about texture limits and things that are and are not "shippable" in various places, and he's very thorough.

Is it just a "do this, do that" tutorial?

The end result is impressive (but sadly "next gen grey")... but I certrainly won't fork over £30 for a tutorial.

The Gnomon Environment Creation for Production and the related Lighting DVD's are fantastic and I'd advise any beginning env artist to check these out. They cover a whole load of stuff that's really very handy to know.

I've just watched the sample video for that Eat3D DVD, and I'm not sure I could sit through any length of tutorial with his voice. Same with Meats Meier. His voice grates with me and I'm unable to watch his stuff :\

Impressive end result with the Eat3D vid, but it does kind of looks like every other next-gen env piece out there
