The Academy of IT in Sydney (AIT) say they are focusing on game development, but they have no idea what they are on about. during my 1 year there they didnt even cover corect UV layouts, texture painting, or even low poly modeling. straight into meshsmooth to fix problems. If anyone is thinking of going there DO NOT GO THERE!!!! if you're wanting to learn 3D go to www.3d-palace.com and get the free tutorials you will learn more!!!!

I'm currently in my second year studying a BA hons in Creative computer game design at Swansea Institute of H.E.

I'm going to say its pretty good so far. I'm in the 2nd year of the course actually running so its a fairly fresh new course. Swansea institute has a pretty well known animation course and a lot of similarities with those courses are visible.
The lectueres are all spot-on and really passionate about what they do, we have speakers come in from the industry regularily and there are trips planned to conferences and the likes. In the words of George Foreman, "I'm so proud of it, I put my name on it!" (I submitted the school to PCgamer UK who ran it in a article about UK games courses).

The first year we did a lot of practical 3d skills and 3d skills, in the second year, lectures are more focused upon theory-based stuff. Such as design processes and systems of gameplay. Today I came away from the lecture learning about the 400 rule project, really interesting stuff!

Just my 2p, but please contact me if you want to know more.

I just finished my 2nd year at the AIE in Canberra, Australia. There's also a Melbourne campus, and i hear they have a higher employment rate for students, but it seems like the only people who don't get jobs in the industry are the slackers.

more info on the AIE here:
http://www.aie.edu.au/

I did the cert 4 course in 3d animation last year, before that I had never touched a 3d app in my life. It's basically a foundation course for noobs I enjoyed that year quite a bit.
more info: http://www.aie.edu.au/courses/cert_iv_3d.php

This year I did the Diploma of Computer Game Development(art side), pretty cool year I'd say. we pitched our game ideas to the guys from Micro Forte next door and they picked which games we'd be working on over the year, they also came in to review our games at various stages. We also had to write design docs, business plans and all that jazz.
Game art wise, it was pretty light. we did a tutorial on normal mapping and a couple tuts on BASIC texturing, but you can learn all that stuff on forums like game-artist.net

game dev info:http://www.aie.edu.au/courses/dip_game_animation.php

all in all, the courses are cheap, the people are nice and I ended up getting a job out of it, so I'm happy

I wouldn't recommend it so far.

Just get involved with some mods, kick around the game art forums for a couple of years and you'll learn more than university courses will teach you. And even if you're at uni, get involved in mods, too. Seriously, for me the learning and experience has been miles better, faster and more fun.
Thankyou for your advice, I was considering going to teeside, I couldn't decide whether It would worth it or not - your advice has made up my mind. I'll continue with my mod work and do a degree in English Literature somewhere else instead.

Thanks again,
H

I'm studying at the University of Teeside and being a complete beginner to all things games based, coming from an art college with only experience with traditonal medium. My opinion of it is that its slow and we never seem to learn anything, it would be better if they gave us sharp fast assesments which teach us the basics than give us huge impossible projects like Pernstejn. Which we seemed to learn nothing of huge value.

I am planning on going to Utrecht too. I'd love to go there, really, their subjects and everything is just what I want. But I live in Belgium and I'm a bit unsure about moving to the Netherlands..

Then my parents said something about a new school in Kortrijk, and it seems I've finally found their site! Thanks to Dummy. Though I wonder.. on the site where it says Curriculum, will you be taking all those things? Or do you have to pick one, like 3D arts, or Programming, etc? I'm not sure about Kortrijk though.. their curriculum seems.. incomplete to me. I think HKU's is much better.

But I've read about how hard it is to get in! (HKU) Though Schuey's post kindof sets me at ease, I still feel a tad unsure.

As you can guess right now I'm all puzzled and don't know what to do. I'll have to do some research and think this over.. I just know I want to do something in the game industry. I have to!
