If I was a studio, why would I hire someone who hasn't put their all into it. I mean consider this guy and then some of the artists on our forums that haven't even graduated high school, yet have awesome portfolios. This isn't one of the toughest industries to get in, more like architecture, engineering, law, etc. Look how much money you have to invest before you're even qualified to "break" into such industries. Bust your ass to make the dream happen, nothings handed to you...

I saw this over at polycount his work needs improving, and theres no one to blame but himself if hes not landing a job. I cant really say his work is crap cause who am i to judge. but he certainly needs to try harder and stop blaming others for his shortcomings. the only way you can get anywhere in life is hard work!

I think thats because PC is a mostly american forum, where as GA is more europe. They dont sugar coat things as much over there

As for breaking into the industry, its tougher when you suck. Thats the problem

I posted on that thread. That guy really does not have a clue. he will look back and realize the errors of his way. There were some people in my school with work like that. They still are not employed, gee I wonder why.....

Honestly this article really bothers me, primarily cause to some degree this guy is pretty much going what I went through. He went to a school that promised the world, and under delivered. But he unfortunately like many probably didn't figure out the real solution to his problem. Hard Work.

The school I went to was supposed to teach us modeling, level design, programming...everything. But due to the kinds of people that were being hired, we really didn't get a lot of good consistent instruction. So it ultimately was put in our own hands as students to use the teachers as much as possible while we had them working for us, while doing as much in your spare time as you possibly could to get good.

I am by no means a natural artist, in fact in College I was by far the worst artist of the group of us. But after school ended...I continued to work just as hard as I had been during school. I created my portfolio within the first couple weeks after getting out of school, it wasn't good enough...not even close. So I added new content, deleted old content, rebuilt the site...again, and again, and again. Eventually found myself with two options, a Game Testing job, which would have technically been my foot in the door in the industry, or a 3D Art job with an online media company.

I went with the online media company and it was the best thing I ever did, it may not have been working in video games, but I learned a ton more about 3d, a ton about interface design (which led me to the job I currently have in the industry), and gave me almost two years experience doing all kinds of client meetings, business trips...you name it.

The Final Point: My final point is that this guy basically sounds like a whiny baby, essentially he wants a shot but he hasn't put the work in to get it yet. It's just frustrating that it was even published cause I think it sends the wrong message to other students out there. You may not break in right out of school, it might take some work, and I don't want to sound like a bad cliche...but it really does take some persistence and hard work.
