Yea I would agree with what lost Irish Boy says.

At the end of the day it’s going good to have a degree but you need to be able to work in your own time and push your self. There is a major difference in being able to follow a tutorial in class and then being able to apply those skills to your own projects from scratch.

Learning to use programs like Unreal is the easy part, being able to make something of quality in them is the hard part. That’s not to say the programs are easy to learn, you pick up something new every time you use them.

Just thought I would give my advice- I work in the CG industry, and its hard to get the right training on the right software that will allow you to build a decent showreel that will get you a job. Maya is the current industry favourite so you should try and get proficient with that before anything else. Alot of university courses are taught by tutors and not industry pros, so you don't always get specific enough training to then actually get in the industry. Non-academic bodies such as Media Design School in New Zealand and Escape Studios in the UK give much more industry focussed training and their tutors are all current or former industry pros- its important to remember that it is your skills (and therefore the showreel that demonstrates them) that are important, not what qualifications you have. Hope this helps!

there are always alternitives though. supposedly xsi's gamemod tool is really good. and free.
I can't say I like to do it but I don't see any other way round it. I dont do it with games etc but there is a difference between £30 and £3000.

As good as some colleges/uni may be you will never learn all you need from just working in the class room on assignments.

basicly what everyone else has said-

you've got to really want to do it and motivate your self to keep modeling and expanding your skills. Dont think of it as "I have to do this to get into the games industry", think "Im doing this for the enjoyment of it" and in due time you could beome a modeler for the next halo. So basicly in a nutshell smile and enjoy

also on a side note a modeling program which has basic modeling facilities is perfectly fine to start
remeber its the worker not the tools which gets the job done!
