Help with Vertex Weighting (Skin)

I am rigging a set of arms and I want to mirror the weights from one arm to another, but it's not working. The little orange box that shows up is in the middle of one of my arms, not in between the two of them like i would guess they should be. Both arms are the same object and the pivot point is in the center.

ah I had a similar problem

I applied reset Xfrom to the mesh. (under your skin modifier in the stack)
You find it under utilities tab -> 'reset Xform' then collapse to it.
