Good cameras for texture photo's ?
There's only so meny images you can google. I need something fresh so I'm going to invest in a camera. But there's a catch, I can only get the camera from one store jacobs. To cut a long story short, brother got some Gift Vouchers jacobs he dont want. So out of the goodness of my heart of offered to give him cash for them, £110 for £60

I don't know about the UK though. In America most stores let you try all the camera's before buying them, but I'm guessing they let you do the same over there too. that being said, the £199 sony camera ( DSC-W90 ) on that site looks like what you need. You may be able to get away with the silly pink fujifilm though. Last edited by Jedah; 16-01-2008 at 05:50 PM. |

I'd go with the Canon Ixus, I owned one for years and found it useful because of the amount of bang for it's size, i.e. you'll always carry around with you (which is great for shooting textures). It's more about how you take the picture than with what really. Angle, overcast --> bring back to PS and fix distortions, color cast, make tileable, sharpen and you're pretty much done.
Regarding MP's, 7 is more than enough. |

ive bought me a Sony H9. It's not a camera that you can put in your pocket and travel around, but you can buy a bag for it :P ( i also recommend a memory stick >=2gb cause this is a 8.1 MP camera).
Texture-wise i'm not disappointed, ive caught some nice textures during my vacations without much effort. However i did buy this camera because of its super-zoom capabilities. Sometimes i need to grab reference from something that is far away, and with this camera i can catch that without having to climb trees and die ![]() The only down side for this camera is that it doesn't save RAW only jpeg. |

You need an EOS 1DS or your textures will suck!
Just kidding ![]() In my own experience, a cheap but sturdy digital SLR (depending on how much cash you're looking to lay down, aswell as how much use you'll get out of it) and a prime lens really, really help. You get more control over your images, can comprimise for bad lighting conditions (to a certain extent), and you can get interchangable lenses that fit the fixture type of your camera. A prime lense is a flat lens that takes photos with no barrel distortion, which means if you get your camera flat onto a wall, the image will be perfectly flat. Curved lenses invaringly make the taken images look like they've had the Spherize filter applied to it in Photoshop, which means you have to "undistort" it in photoshop again, which obviously gives a less perfect end result. |

If you can't afford a D SLR, there's some very respectable "Bridge" cameras out there. Bridge cameras are something of mid-way point between a D SLR and a standard digital camera.
Although they lack the absolute control and precision of a D SLR, they're usually a fair bit cheaper and are decent enough (although it's best to ensure you can get one with a good lens because you can't change lenses on a bridge). |
