I love this site, though I'm not a huge poster I read some of you guys replies with you're nice long, indepth, yet not bias or objective views and I highly respect many of you for it.

in my experience the main reason noobies dont get crits is because they are lazy. they dont take the time to try and learn or even listen to what people have to say, they just make a post and demand help without really contributing anything themselves to the community.

Things like this are very frustrating.

However, there are new people who expect to receive crits, while they don't want to do anything for it. If you see 3 people give crits on the same issue, then I'd expect that issue to be fixed when the next update comes, or at least a note to tell that it will be fixed soon.
I know this will sound harch to some people, but personaly I'm more inclined to reply to someone with an acceptable post count and an "active" status in a forum, than to someone who's asking for crits on his in his first post. Doesn't matter how skilled they are, nor does the fact that I'm a staff member here and that I want to make this a great community. To me the active status is simply saying that he's willing to add something to the community, and that's reason enough for me to spend 15 minutes writing crits for his work...
very much my opinion.

I've seen that with mediocre and advanced modelers as well though a lot unfortunately.
But yeah beginners do it too.

Doylle slightly mentioned an, in my opinion, big reason why beginners don't get a lot of c&c. "If you see 3 people give crits on the same issue".
People love repeating other people's posts and crits (everywhere on the internet) or simply don't read other people's posts, and people who have been around longer just say that or say that the crit being made will be worked on.
But beginners don't, so people dont expect an update and don't look for other things to crit about their work. So the threads just come to a halt. I saw a lot of this at CGtalk.

Personally, I think that beginners dont really want to critique beginner or people reasonable work because they think that someone better than them should post. Often I've gone to post thinking that they probally have more experience than me and stop posting. And with really good work all it is is "good job".

I'm silly like that.

Same! Vast majority of forum members here are well beyond me, so i normally feel me trying to "crit" their work would be pointless.

theres a difference between critting work on a technical level and offering your opinion. Everyone has an opinion on how something could look better, whether its colours, lighting setup, design of a character etc

so even if your not 100% up on the technical side theres still a lot people can comment on

Yea like Ben said, you don't neccesarily have to crit on technical stuff...other thoughts are always helpful.

A real problem though, that I have seem with some people is that they crit on technical stuff when they don't have a clue of what they're talking about. Generally if you're wrong though, someone will correct the crit so its not really a problem.

Bah i hate getting critique on the technical side it's still game-"art"ist.net not game-"engineer".net
Opinions matter more to me than technical views (except if it's about render errors where i need it ) But meh thats just me.

Do you guys think opinions are important when getting critique? (of course, with the understanding from both sides that they're "just" opinions).

You kind of have to be careful taking opinion crits. They can be useful for fixing issues you can't quite put your finger on yourself, but for the most part they can be safely disregarded in the interest of preserving your own artistic vision. I try not to give them much because I want others to fulfill their own ideas of good, not mine.

If you see something like a vert doing nothing, a poor silhouette... those things you can say without a doubt that they should be fixed. But if you think a color is off, or a character's clothes are silly, you have to think really hard about whether it'd be a useful thing to say.

imo.
