Short time frame... What to do?
Alright, I'm planning to apply as a game artist in a month or so from now, but my time frame is very short. I have been doing lots of freelance work for a brazilian studio but I'm afraid I won't be able to use them on my portfolio, since the game they were made for hasn't been announced yet. So what would be best? A nice texture pack? Some level geometry in 3dmax with 100% custom textures? I thought of making a source map using 100% custom assets but I just don't have enough time to waste on compiling assets (takes so damn much in source!!).
Ideas and thoughts are welcome ![]() |

Hey Mino,
I reckon a few small scenes whipped up in max would be a good idea, such as a section of a street with a few props in it (trashcan, bench, street light, etc..) You could also update your portfolio with some of the latest work you've done for Insurgency. Also, have you tried asking the studio if you are allowed to include some of the work you've done for them in your portfolio? It might be worth a shot if you haven't already... ![]() |

Yeah. Make some smaller scenes, and do them really well. It doesn't take a whole lot to get people interested enough to offer you an art test, really - I generally get most of my contracts off a few finished bits, and some WIP screengrabs. So don't worry too much about it.
You do already have some strong work in your portfolio already, and it's great seeing nice env work. I'm sure if you get a small handful of really well done scenes together, you'll be golden ![]() Best of luck, dude!

I'm not an environment artist but it seems to me like you have the bulk of a portfolio and by the sounds of it some good experience. If I was you I would concentrate on one mind blowing piece that doesnt involve crates, or dumpsters, so your reel gets noticed good luck in the job hunt ![]() |

My portfolio is very outdated to be honest, and I'll only update it in a month or so... thanks for the comments and ideas guys!
I'll probably do what Alchemist said and make one hardcore piece, maybe some organic modelling since I've been learning zbrush and mudbox (about bloody time!) |
