3ds Max or Maya

I don`t really understand which one I should focus learning?

From what I kno is, Maya is great for character design, and 3ds Max is great for making architectural buildings. But if u use 3ds max and zbrush u can achieve the same result as in maya`s?

I dunno shit about modeling you guys, I`m so blurr!!

oh, my purpose of learning is I want to model realistic human with clothes and weapons..

Ultimately, it doesn't matter.

I'd say that Max and Maya are pretty much equal in terms of modeling/texturing/uving and in their pros and cons.

Neither of them are built specifically for characters or architectural stuff - they're generalised 3D programs. Neither of them tower over the other in any field.

Just pick up some evaluation versions of each and see which you like best.

Zbrush is an entirely different, 3rd party program and neither Max nor Maya have Zbrush's sculpting capabilities. So I'm not sure where you heard that a Max & Zbrush combo is comparable to Maya - but it's incorrect.

Yeah these thread pop up every other week. it matters not. it's just a different configuration of buttons at the end of the day. The fundamentals are the same. I'm a long time max user and I really like it but recently i've been using a lot of maya and contrary to popular belief it's actually really good for poly modelling.

Aye. Talon has it, tbh.

Grab demos of all the apps that might fill your ticklist and go try them for yourself. Maya and Max aren't the only ones, so look at the other big ones. Or read up on them.

The trouble with asking people on a forum is that pretty much all artists are zealously overprotective of their chosen brand of software, and are downright hateful of the rest.

You're hear to learn. Get learnin'!

Best of luck and I hope you find something that suits you.

I'm learning both because that's an obligation at school.

In my opinion and as it was said by Talon there is not one built specifically for characters or architectural stuff.

Otherwise, I can say that I like much Maya for animation than Max, I'm learning both in same time so I can't say that's because I'm used to Maya or something else that I like it much (for animation).

In Maya, I also like the sculpt mode and the 3D paiting tool but I prefer much 3dsmax for modelisation lol.

Anyway, later I won't have to make choice between them because they 'll be combined
There are obviously some others 3D programs such as XSI, C4D and etc...

But I don't even know them.

Actually, I don't like either Max or Maya much.

But I was trying to keep personal opinions out of it :P

One thing to keep in mind is the price of programs like max/maya etc.

If you are just starting out, and aren't sure wether you will keep going with it, or even if you just want to get a feel for 3d, a good idea would be to download either a trial version of some programs, or a free, fully fledged, feature rich 3d program like, i don't know [url]http://www.blender.org/

Programs like blender will do anything max or maya will, but the workflow may be slightly different, and it's not industry standard like max or maya are, so many people do not like to learn them. However, it must be noted that they compare very favourably.

For game modelling, I think any conventional 3d modelling app is fine, the only exceptions are programs that are specifically targeted towards one thing, e.g zbrush is a great tool to complement a traditional modelling program, but is really only good for high poly/normal map baking purposes.
