Senior Artist asking advice: Is my portfolio not working?
Hello guys,
I think I need some second -and third, and fourth- opinions and advices on my portfolio(s). My main portfolio is here: liondart.com , I think is what represents me the most. But giving in to the temptations of social networks, I had also created my Behance Profile and it's projects. And third, I have buildt an alternative, password-protected portfolio, either for stuff I don't want running wild on the Internet for everyone to see, or artworks that simply do not represent the kind of style i am confortable with: Here it is. Pass 'davinci' without quotes. (I will change the password next week.) So, now, a little bit of my background: I am an argentine-born italian, Senior Artist (+8 ys of experience working on games, all in Argentina). I am in Europe for indefinite time, and looking for the ideal job, although I may be willing to make some sacrifices while I adjust myself to the experience gap between the latin-american and the european industry. I am looking for a good job in ANY country within the European Union and not having much luck until now. False honesty appart, I think my self as a swiss-army-knife artist, I am intimate with various forms of game art, from 2D bitmap, vector, pixelart to 3D modelling and texturing. ...I may have already an idea of what my problem is, but I want to know your honest and unconditioned thoughts. Well-meaning but ruthless comments and opinions are welcome, you'll doing me a favour. ![]() Thank you! |

Nice work you have there.
If I was to crit it I would reckon there could be more pieces that look like they are specially for games. RTS game Stormrise concept arts (update 10/02/2010)) This guy is one of my favorites. Really great in props, characters, vehicles, you name it. |

Like Kanga said, your work is pretty good, but doesn't really have any work for games.
My only real problem is that you only really have one style (clean, cartoonish). If an employer was looking for something other than that style, you probably wouldn't be considered. I would try to work on something different.

As the other guys said - your work is really nice, but it looks like you're more an illustrator rather than a game artist.
You don't mention in your post what kind of job you are looking for. What is it exactly you want to do? When you answer that quesiton you can look at your work and see if it matches with the kind of job you want. You can also look at the work of other people who are doing the job you want and see what they are doing. You want to be an environment concept artist? - do a load of environment pieces of different landscapes and buildings etc. If you want to be a character artist - do characters and include turn arounds. Tailor your portfolio to the job you want, but you have to know what that job is first! |

Well... I've been paying attention to your advices here, and on some threads at LinkedIn, that really made things a little more clearer to me. So I came up with this alternative portfolio, and I feel it's starting to make a difference. Let's see what happens.
Maybe I still could should show more to the detail asset production? What do you think? I will work on it. |
