Five guys can make a game 150 can't!

Xbox co-creator: "It's about gameplay, stupid"

Quote:
Seamus Blackley of Innovative Leisure talks about "video games unplugged" and how five guys can make a game 150 can't

Seamus Blackley, co-creator of the original Xbox and founder of mobile startup Innovative Leisure, is one of the more intelligent and charismatic veterans of the games business that you'll ever meet, and so when Blackley talks we listen. Blackley was giving a presentation at The International Games Innovation Conference held at The Strong in Rochester, NY,...

We asked Blackley about how easy (or difficult) making games for mobile really is. It's obviously a lot less difficult than the console market from a financial standpoint. Blackley has an interesting perspective on the market, however.

"With respect to budgets and smaller teams sizes, I really think that's secondary. That's an analysis by people who are thinking about this in an abstracted business way, not thinking about it from the standpoint of the audience. What's happening is the audience is demanding stuff that is cool and different, and plays differently and fits into their lives in a different way. And you're able to deliver that, luckily, with smaller groups of people, because you're getting back to sort of the purity of what game design is," he observed.

I've noticed more and more lately that small indie teams of 2-5 people have been making a bigger splash than AAA game makers. The big publishers control the big companies, influence decisions and make modern games conform to a certain standard. This is good from a financial standpoint for the publisher, not so good for creativity. In the past few years I've been small companies make some serious progress thanks to XBLA and Steam.

It all depends on the game obviously. The reason that these small teams are able to make a splash and disrupt the whole market is because they are innovating at a rate exponentially higher than the big studios.. They are making less polished, less complex and well much much lower quality products than an established studio by more measurements but they are creating something that the studios are - games that are different, that don't fit in a mold and that create new forms of interaction.

Sit 5 guys down and ask them to make Assassin's Creed 5 and they will fail 10 times out of 10 but get a team of 150 at Ubisoft to invent angry birds and they will sit around for 200 years scratching their butts and come up with bupkiss

Yes...Netflow is right...It depends on Game...But for Start ups if there is small team than it will be easy & helpful way to make realy cool game.. But as I've experienced that few people thinks that there is lot of money in Gaming Industry so they came into it & start messing with everything...About Big AAA games...They are more experienced & have started from scratch.... after they reached to this Level...Every one has their own Ideas...But there are many stupid people out there who are ready to screw everything so be aware.....

Because of the cost of smaller games, mobile/indy stuff, people can afford to be more creative.

The art pipeline is a lot smoother, mistakes are less costly, and there's less layers of approval to go through.

I agree that we're seeing, especially visually, some truly incredible stuff coming out at the moment from indy devs. Hotline Miami is a great example of a visually striking, if initially crude seeming style that really suits the game.

Amazing Article... nicely said..
It is like , It doesn't matter how much resources you have. How do you use your Resources is important. No matter how much budget and artist you have. You will end up with nothing if you don't know how to utilize their talent, their ideas , their creativity. And it also kills creativity of artists. So don't waste your talent guys. Don't do work that you don't enjoy doing it.
