how to make a 2D panorama from 3D terrain??

hi all,

so i'm trying to figure out a way to 'project' or 'bake' or 'transfer' or whatever it's called... a 3D mountain range onto a series of 2D 'fence-like' planes to use as a panorama of distant mountains in this scene i'm making. i want the panorama to have a normal map so i can move the sunlight around in the scene and have it effect the lighting on the 2D 'card'...

is this possible?... is there a name for what i'm trying to do?...

thanks all,

Jared

hehe thanks for the reply!

so, i googled "panorama rendering" and from what i understood about it, it's not exactly what i'm trying to do... i'm trying to do something more like when videogames replace a distant 3D building with an image of that building mapped to a 2D 'card' to save memory.

am i on the right track with this approach??
