Beginner Needs Idea/help

Hi everyone

I've been messing around with graphics for a few years now. But i have never completed a complete scene for a game (or anything for that matter). Can anyone suggest a good 3d environment to start with? like an island, city or whatever. I just can't come up with any good ideas :/
I'll post it here when I'm done.

I'm 16 and I really need to start finishing what i start.

Do something that interests you. In my experience there's no such thing as a good environment idea, it's how well the artist can portray that idea in a gaming context when creating it.

If it's your first environment, go for something small. If you try and do a city you have to think about the amount stuff you have to create for it - loads of props as well as the buildings whereas if you do a small room you kinda limit yourself as a room can only hold so much before it looks cluttered with stuff.

But again, do something that interests you, if it's a big scene, yes it will take you a while, but if your really interested in the idea, you'll stick with it.

Hope this helps!

Mmmm most people do alley ways at the start. Guess they're perfect for practising tillable texturing and even if you're wanting to push it go in depth with the grunge and dirt like most alley ways have. Maybe a vent with some steam floating out would look epic as well.

I agree with AndyJB though, tis entirely what interests you where you'll succeed, because if you don't enjoy what you're making then you won't be able to get excited about it.

EDIT: props for the skyrim avatar, lol you could just take some screenshots of the skyrim cities and try replicate them. Good practise.

I think I'm going to go for a fantasy-medieval kind of city. Like one of the cities in Skyrim. It will be difficult for me, but I'll spend all my time on it. Thanks for the advice

.
Cool Look forward to seeing what you come up with! You gonna use UDK, Unity or any other engine to put everything together?

A bit of inspiration never hurts either look for massive amounts of reference and stuff that will keep your mind fresh and interested!

I was going to use unity. But is UDK any better? I haven't really done any software comparisons. The only reason I'm using unity is because my friends use it.

in my experience, Unity is easier to jump right in, but for absolutely amazing graphics, UDK may give you better results with their material system. Putting your town together in either one will be great experience though, no matter which you choose. Having a bunch of friends who use Unity already means that you would have a valuable support network close by.

Although I've never used Unity, I kinda agree, if all your friends use unity then you'll have quite a bit of help there. But saying that, the udk forum is like a treasure trove of information. If you're thinking about doing this as a career maybe do a bit research to see what one is more valuable to know about but maybe that's thinking too much into it lol
