getting started(help me!)
Hi everyone. I'm 18 and i am new to game art and i have no idea where to start. asking consulers at school got me no where. I'm pretty good with traditional art but i have little to no experience with digital art. Can someone please give some solid pointers on where i can get started?

Well it depends on what aspect you want to go for, genrally pick the one that most intrest you and there for will be most enjoyable.
Once you've picked an area to go for you can start aiming towards some out comes. Weather you want to go to uni or work on it in your own time. If your not used to 3D it genrally takes at least 2 years to be anywhere near where you want to be. Its just one of those thing that takes time and practice. This link will help with getting started in 3D. http://www.game-artist.net/forums/ge...rted-free.html DVD that i would recomend. Great for learning the software you intend to use (but genrally you dont come out with anything spectaular): Digital-Tutors > CG, 3D, Animation and VFX Training and Tutorials More detailed DVDs (genrally you want to have some basic knowledge first): Eat 3D | Feed Your Brain! The Gnomon Workshop - Tutorials for visual effects artists, concept designers, sculptors and comic book illustrators and traditional artists using Maya, ZBrush, 3ds Max, Photoshop and Painter as well as traditional drawing and painting. Free tutorials: Google will take you a amount of the way to finding free tutorials. And 3D forums will also have some.

If you dont mind spending some money, from my experence, Eat3D is one of the best for creating high end stuff. Really good projects and good quality tuition.
Another option is 3D buzz, this is free, they have some very good starter projects but dont go into deetail about some of the more modern techniques. 3dmotive has some cool stuff too... |

Well, start with whatever you want to do. When I started, I wanted to see my own weapons inside a game (mod) so I started to look around for help on what I needed to do that. Which at the time was simply modeling and that was it. I was content with importing blank, white models into a HL1 mod. And then it grew from there.
So start at the beginning. What fascinates you the most? When you look at a game, what do you wish you had created? The gun in your hands, the lamp on the wall, the characters running around? The level itself? The lighting? The explosions? The wall textures? ...etc.
