Engaging the players
Hiya everyone.
I'm new, as you can see. And while I may not have as much experience as most of you do, I think I've got a few things down. First off, I make low-poly models. I've been working on a project for a few years now, and have gotten better over the years. But while I've been working on this, I've noticed in a lot of games developers tend to focus on one thing: Graphics or Stories. And while my statement is a bit far fetched (because we do get the occasional beauties on all platforms) I've been looking for a site such as this to find answers and express opinions. Do you feel there is a balance? Or would you rather focus on one thing? Maybe it's due to my lack of ability in 3-D modeling, but I tend to enjoy story-driven games rather than looking at graphical powerhouses...not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with that. I do enjoy a beautiful game, but I also enjoy games that give me a purpose. As I continue to work on my project, my question for you is simple: Do you prefer an engaging story with games/your own projects? I like to think my works will make players think, and that the story will make them want to continue. At the same time, I want my game to be visually pleasing. The thread is now yours. Well I think it depends on the kind of gamer you are and the type of gameplay that you want.
For instance games such as cod1/2 did not really have any storyline, but had a good gameplay and did not pretend to have anything other. In cod4 though, they began using a storyline that was not built properly, but they also had pretty good graphics. I'd rather have the good graphics and no storyline, than have a half assed storyline that kills all immersion. If both can be accomplished then go for it, in games such as final fantasy series, they have always had amazing graphics and a very very strong story to implement these in. This has resulted in some of the most amazing games i have ever played. The game can also have the most beautiful graphics ever and a great storyline. But if the gameplay is horrible this is to no help. It really is a balancing act, and each game company should decide what kind of genre they are going to create in. And what is the most important for that genre. Because if they are not committed to bringing all elements together and creating something truly fantastic, they might as well figure out what element to keep out so that it does not feel half done. |
