well first off ill tell you that this is a worthless assignment and a waste of time. Word is quite obviously a great tool and i would hope people would know how useful it is before they get to your level of education. another thing is, there are alternatives to 'microsoft word' that are also useful and fill a similar role.
for me as a industry artist i use word for: -resumes -invoices -documenting workflows and tech specs

It seems like a weird paper assignment, as if they couldn't think of a better way for you to spend your time. If they were asking about Photoshop/Illustrator or Google, then they might get something relevant.OpenOffice Writer benefits me more than Microsoft Word, by not having to waste money on Microsoft Word.
Real Answer: Here, that kind of program generally gets used for most project documentation and spec sheets. I'd generally rather use notepad.exe or actual paper for quick notes than to use a full-fledged writing program like Word or Writer. Creative answers: -You can use the install disk as a hat, or as a yarmulke (yamaka) if you get invited to a barmitzpha at the last minute. -It doubles as a Frisbee, sharpen the edges and it becomes a deadly weapon -It triples as a coaster, since everyone has run out AOL discs by now. -You can used the disk to reflect the sun onto the wall and make your cat chase it -You can set the font to Courier and make an ASCII image of Yoda. -You can write military secrets, and set the highlighter color to black to hide them all from everyone -You can make a pirate flag by set the font to wingdings and typing a huge skull and crossbones |
