Game Dev Magazine Suggestions?
I was thinking about subscribing to some new game art/dev magazines lately, and figured you'd guys would have some great suggestions. I don't know about you, but I often would prefer to read an article in a magazine, than to read it online. A little rough on the eyes after a while. Also, there are many times when I'm away from the computer, with time to read articles here and there.
I could just search Google for mags, but I value yall's opinion. I'm looking for all kinds of stuff; everything ranging from the technical products and techniques of the Game industry to plain old game previews and reviews. As of now, I am subscribed to : CGW (Computer Graphics World) GameInformer GameDeveloper ...and would suggest these too ![]() Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ![]()

Well i get 3d world and it pretty good but i would say its more based towards the film industry, occasionally has some games stuff in it (have to say not very much games stuff though), but some of it kinda tranferes over.
Im pretty sure you can grab them in whsmiths so you can test it out before subsricbing Honestly havent seen loads of hard copy magazines, I think edges is one but dont know how good it is cause i dont get it. But would certainly like to know of a few more magazines i prefere my hard copy stuff to.

Edge is actually quite good. They have indepth reports and articles that are usually well written and researched. Retro Gamer is of course focused on the old school but can still be quite interesting.

I subscribe to 3DWorld and concur that it has slightly less game orientated stuff in it but definitely a lot of good tips for artists of all abilities and is all relevant, plus you get a cd every week with free models and software trials etc which is really nice!
Haven't read Edge much but hear that its pretty good, apparently my final year university project was also in the last edition so I should really pick that up!

I have a subscription to 3D World, but I've found the lack of games related material a little annoying. I've recently subscribed to edge which is all about games so I will get back to on you on what I think about it.
3D World is great for tutorials, software and hardware information. I'm pretty sure you don't get any of that in edge however... |

I have to throw another vote for Edge. As it's a gaming mag you won't find a lot techical information per se. When I got intersted in making game assets, I got a subscription ($90 USD
) and the images where very helpful. The articles are great too and give a lot of insight into the 'games industry'.S6 |

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I've got lots of good leads. Now, I just have to widdle the decision down to one or two subs. They cost alot more than I planned for. I'm not made of money!
![]() Oh, and I already have two Ballistic books They are fantastic, and I'd love to get another. Art Of Uncharted looks incredible!

Seriously, get Edge. While their reviews are sometimes of the "everyone else likes it so we won't" type, they do write about games in a serious way which is miles a head of many other mags. And the interviews with developers are usually pretty good, as are the retrospectives etc. Expensive though...
Game Informer seems to be another good review type magazine. As for pure development magazines, Game Developer is the closest you'll get afaik. Develop is more about the industry and commercial side of it and MCV is just a glossy advert, mostly concerned with sales and marketing. |

Edge is the only magazine I've ever liked enough to subscribe to.
On top of having some of the best games journalists in the mag, they're all for raising the bar for games, rather than lapping up every single release that gets put on their desks. It's a more serious, deeper read than most of the guff you'd find at your newsagents, tbh.
