Speaking of future competitions, is there going to be any organic competitions coming up? I had a feeling it would be all environment work but thought I'd ask anyway

b)If you don't spend time on the above organization, you end up with a whole heap of low content, low value competitions and posts, such as one I saw on polycount which was pretty much "Make a melee weapon for a game lol" which then devolved into people posting pictures of dildos and going haha guys wouldnt it be funny if we made this as a melee weapon amirite?

Looking forward to the new competition guys, I haven't had the chance to participate in one of the new GAMC's yet.
I guess you haven't been around then. (I know that's not true, but it's for emphasis) The old staff held regular competitions all the time, and even when they switched to the GMAC they were holding one each month. The last competition was way back last year in November. The GMAC is already established so it's not like there needs a lot of thought to start a new competition, it doesn't take 3 months to think up of a new theme.

That sounds harsh for the new staff, but anyone that has been here knows that the competitions are the main dynamic of these forums.

lol of course I am just annoyed that there wasn't a competition during the holiday break in December. I was swamped and was unable to to participate in a lot of the GMAC's, but during the break I finally had the time and there wasn't one.

The problem with running a challenge over the December break was that there was no one on staff to process the entries. We'll have a new Mini-Challenge for you in a week or two, and something more exciting coming up over the next few months.

Then get more staff? Seriously if it's just a matter of getting more admins to process the entries and sort it out then I'm sure you would have people from the community who would be willing. Judging the art is slightly different matter though I think.

Game Artisans has more than enough organic challenges, what game-artist needs is enviro/vehicle minis, with no reference provided, just a theme.

Didn't really interest me that way...that way, most of the entries look the exact same, I think a theme would be better, like 'Dirt-bike' or 'space fighter' or 'graveyard' or something, it frees the artist up to use their imagination; for the environments they could be restricted to something like the cornered challenge...not a whole environment, just a snapshot of it. Really do feel at least one of the game art forums gotta represent on the vehicle/enviro front though...both GA and 3DTotal tend to stick to characters, so does PC when it does a comp.

The reason for a reference is to help facilitate a work environment that one would face as a game artist. You have a set time period and concept art that you must follow. You can deviate from the concept a bit and put your own spin on it, but must not drastically change the core of the structure.

Of course the rules are definitely more relaxed than a real work environment. Personally I felt pretty free to do what I wanted when I did the GMAC wall unit. Mine was a cloner/baby grower which worked within the given concept, but was far from what everyone else interpreted.
