Haha I felt the same way when I opened maya....max is the bomb.
As for your question though, I also started out with blender...taught me everything I know then once I realized that blender wasnt used in the industry I figured I better learn somethign else. So I learned Max...but I do have to say that blenders animation setup was 10 times easier for me than max's....and I didnt have to read that many tutorials to figure out how it worked. The problem you will run into with blender is that it doesnt use n-gons yet....maybe they upgraded but as of the last update it didnt. Altho that might help you learn to keep it in quads.
So I would say go with maya or blender.
