Low Poly Comp
Just a quick question. I am new to all this stuff. My cousin, believe it or not works for Neversoft (the company that makes tony hawk games). I really wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a game creator. Why not right? thing is I know nothing about all this and i have recently downloaded Maya and Blender. I have tried tutorials and they do provide alot of information. but not even that can help me. For example in one of my blender tutorials i found it said press the RAM button. Im pretty sure there is no ram button on my keyboard and i couldnt find a ram button on blender. So I Can't use that program. considering that every tutorial I find asks me to press that. Well anyways I guess you can see what kind of a problem im in.
NOW for the competition. I really would like to submit a entry into the competition. I honestly don't care SO much about winning. (although that you be great.) But the thing is, I DONT EVEN KNOW HOW TO MAKE A SIMPLE CRATE! i fell so stupid that I can't make somthing as simple as that. If any one can help me. PLEASE. PLEASE HELP! ![]() NOTE: i know alot of you are gunna say: why don't you just ask your cousin? WELL i would if he wasnt "too Busy 24/7" HE DIDNT EVEN COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS. First, I bet it took all us here months before we could do something nice in 3d. There are no easy softwares when it comes to 3D. The problem with tutorials is that they require some kind of knowledge about the software. Some are for pros, other for beginners, but even the ones that are for beginners are sometimes impossible to make without knowing a lot of stuff. I'm "lucky" to say that when I started learning this I didn't have access to internet and all I had was the Help from 3dsmax that tells something about every button in there. When I started making stuff after tutorials I already knew a lot of things, and it was easy. Now my little brother is starting to learn 3dsmax too... and he has the same problem as yours. So I'm going to tell you what I tell him every time: the Help is the first tutorial you have to finish. I don't know how well documented is Blenders or Mayas Help but I guess everything is in there. I know it is boring to read that stuff, and I'm sure you want to make some awesome models as soon as possible but usually it takes more time. Read as much as you can about the program and I guarantee you won't regret this in the future.
Good luck! |

Andy,
I don't know how else to say it, but if this is really what you want then fight throught it, learn it. All of us here learn that way. There are a lot of excellent tutorials out there for Maya, or even books. Consider investing in some of that if you're really serious about it all. Cheers |

Hi man, Haha i know this post sounds cheesy but don't expect to get everything looking great in the beginning. My first model was a lightsaber hilt for Jedi Academy, i thought it looked great, but then i saw some other peoples and boy did mine look like crap, but see instead of quitting i got me a soda and some potato chips [great addittion when researching stuff] and looked around on some forums and images and noticed things off the bat, "Oh i could do that" "That looks tight" etc. and i still do that to this day, This site is the best resource i've found to date. People here are friendly and them articles pwn. So just keep at it bettering your skills little by little, noticing what others are doing and incorporating that into your knowledge.
Good Luck, as for your blender problem i have no idea, I tried using blender once, i couldn't get the hang of it so i stuck with max. Again, good luck. |

I've never seen a "RAM" button in blender-either you or the tutorial was wrong.
PM me if you need any specific help in regard to using blender (if you decide to keep on using blender instead of maya) -I'm no expert, but I've been using it about a year and know what most of the buttons do. Alternatively, post in the blender artists help forums; you'll get an answer in hours at a minimum, as there are always hundreds of people online. |
