Game Artist Mini Competition - LAUNCHED!
The original post
Hello Game-Artists! As some of you may have read in the Speed Competition forum, a sad day is upon us as we are closing down both the speed modeling and the speed texturing competitions. "But they were so popular" I hear you murmur in the face of this seemingly unbelievable move. Yes, they were immensely popular, continually getting bigger, to the point where we had to change certain parts of the forum in order for them to even work! But we believe we can do one better. We want to stimulate people to make good models and textures, to optimize their uv layout, to squeeze every last bit of resource out of the given specs, since that's what game art is all about, and that's what Game-Artist.net is all about - Solid game art. The Speed Texture Competition and Speed Model Competition were about speed, pure and simple. With speed being the only real factor in this competition, and as a result a lot of the models submitted had inefficient topology, or textures which were not finished. This was ofcourse nature of those competitions. We really missed the optimization, so in our next competition overall quality and the creation of real game-ready assets will be more important. Ultimately it's our goal to provide the impetus for you to create portfolio-worthy pieces for this competition. Now, obviously we don't want to tell you everything just yet and keep you all on the edge of your seat. So stay tuned and we will release more info when the competitions starts. One last thing. Stick a big red X in the August 2nd slot of your calendar ![]() Best regards, The Game-Artist.net Staff, Proudly supported by CGSociety.org The update Dear Game Art Community, With the start of the competition coming closer every day, we thought it would be a good idea to share some more information with you about this competition. Like we've previously mentioned, the main goal of this new event is for you to make portfolio-worthy artwork. Therefore we have decided to make the Game Artist Mini Comp (GAMC) completely prop-based. The idea is that we will provide you with concept art & specifications and you will be asked to create a game-ready object, based on the concept, using contemporary game-art creation techniques. We hope that with the new format of this competition, you'll be sufficiently challenged to train every aspect of making game art, which was not really possible with our previous speed competitions, however wildly popular they ended up being. The new GAMC will be somewhat different in other ways, too - When Chris Brown (aka Coridium) won a podium place in our SFAM competition, he graciously donated his CG textures prize to GA.net, so that we could hand it out as a prize for one of our competitions. So we're very pleased to announce that the winner of this competition will win one 100MB CGTextures membership, donated by Chriss Brown. Thank you very much for that! We really liked the idea of a real prize for the winner of the GAMC, so it is with great pleasure that we can tell you that every GAMC will be proudly sponsored by CGTextures, meaning that the winner of each GAMC will receive a 100MB CGTextures membership. Our thanks to Marcel and the guys over there for supporting our community with subscriptions to their awesome resource site, reknowned the world over, used by almost every serious environment artist. We hope to see you in the GAMC thread this Sunday, for the launch of this excellent event. Until then, take care, The Game-Artist.net staff, Proudly supported by CGSociety.org Last edited by doylle; 28-07-2009 at 01:57 PM. |

That sounds understandable for why they closed. I added the date to my sticky note collection!

Sounds like a great idea, but will be interesting to how they repeat. Assuming they do... getting the time for each mini competition right will be really important to make sure people continue to enter.

So no. Not really anything like the Game Artisan mini comps. I mean, they don't have fireworks, or victory music, or a bandstand or nuthin! ![]()
