GAMC #1 - chris89
hi gals,
got excited by this new competition so decided to join Should be fun!Dont have much time today, but i made a little start anyway. A quick 1 hour blockout. ![]() Still have to play with proportions, once i got my mind set on proportions and function then i'll be remaking the whole thing in detail. Hope to see the other wips soon as well and good luck to all! |

thanks for the quick comments guys.
Lloyd: this is mainly a seperate blockout mesh, so i can get the proportions down. If the proportions are correct in a blockout mesh then it saves a lot of trouble making the high poly since you dont have to worry as much about the proportions. So the High Poly will be a seperate mesh. And yes, gotta love the new max viewport light ![]() Zpanzer: you are right. I always have problems with those kind of shapes, i will mess around with it more tomorrow. Any tricks are welcome ![]() |

Looking good so far, as Zpanzer said the side things were a bit bulky indeed.
There's one thing I find kind of comical though, it seems to me that most people misinterpreted the display at the top for some kind of panel with buttons or a ventilation system.. perhaps I'm the one who got it wrong though? ![]() I were under the impression that it'd be a touch-screen with on-screen buttons to select options and go through the menu of the thing. Then again, minor changes to the concept are allowed, so it's not really a problem. /Edit: Btw, that's Max 2010's default lighting? Bastards, they totally nicked it off of Doylle ![]()

I have an idea for what I think that top bit is but I won’t say anything yet =P
as for blocking out. I haven’t done that myself, it might come in useful. Normally I just start out with a box and go from there, I don't fully understand the high to low ripping process. so I guess that’s something else I need to get down. last time I tried it didn’t work right. You don't unwrap the high poly do you? just the low. (sorry if this is topic hijacking) -lloyd (I hope Softimage gets some nicer viewport lighting, or 3ds gets Softimage’s keyboard layout =P it’s all about the S key baby!) |

Ah lots of discussion about the that top panel
to be honest i'm not quite sure what it is either.Hmm, i guess it will depend on the function of the unit and what fits best with it. Some things one can quickly come up with: Ventilation Grate for scent to come through LCD panel (good idea Tiros )Solar panel for power holding plate for food trays input for resources I'll have to decide what function the thing has to see which one i'm going for. Lloyd: You only unwrap the lowpoly as far as i know. Except if you want to bake some textures that are mapped on the highpoly as well. Actually, thanks for reminding me of that technique ![]() But yeah, generally you would not unwrap the highpoly, you dont need it for normal baking since it only uses the geometry to calculate it. Tiros: the viewport lighting needs to be setup though, the standard light is the same as in every max. But the hardware shading viewport works with gamma correction and IES lights, which you set up yourself but create pure porn.
