Alien Foundation [UDK Environment]

Hi Everyone,

This is one of my most recent environments, built over the course of 2 months with all original assets, running real-time in UDK. Inspired by HR Giger and the Aliens Universe, and concept art by my friend Luke Brubaker (Luke Brubaker: Game Artist)

C&C Welcome!

And... a flythrough!

Thanks for checking my stuff out!

The quality of the models (low and highpoly) and the textures are absolutely great! The composition and lighting of the scene as a whole however is a bit dull and repetitive. When i pinch my eyes, there is not much contrast or silhouette shapes in the image. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great environment but if you concentrate more on the environment as a whole, you can get even better results!

Hope you don't mind but I did a quick paint over of this for you.

As amazing as the models are for this piece, they are too uniform, and you really need to start pulling out specific areas to make it less busy. The lighting and color choices of this piece could benefit from some major tweaking. I really like the large lights you've got running along the top and sides of halls, and I would really suggest you make those your main light source. In contrast put less emphasis on the lights that are built into the inner recesses of the models. (the tiny red lights in the original image).

Overall I'd shift the pallet away from the dark black/purple and shift it more to a green and bluish turquoise, It's a bit more traditional and common for this type of environment and you could argue makes the piece less unique, yet sometimes traditions are there for a reason.

I totally agree with killermiller's paintover - Your scene is really nice, but the abundance of red lighting is very distracting. You need to be very careful with red as its a colour that our eyes focus on so having it scattered everywhere kind of kills your composition.
