General Purpose Robot

Hi Guys,

After almost three years in the Games industry as a 3D artist I have come to the conclusion that I have let my drawing skills wane to the point where I almost no longer enjoy putting pen to paper (or pen to wacom).

So I have decided to set out on a quest to get my skills up to at least a mediocre level, but most importantly to start enjoying drawing again.

This is the first piece I have done in a long time, I know its not great and it is as generic as hell, hence the title.

I'm going to try and do these kinds of small illustrations more often and hopefully I might start getting better.

Crits welcome.

Oh, I painted it in Photoshop using a Intuos 3 A4.

thats awesome! the way the lighting hits is really nice. do you paint in the light while you're rendering, or is it some sort of overlay?

Glad you like it, cheers.

I can't really say Ive got any sort of definate workflow that I would recommend, It took me ages to paint this. I basically kept faffing about with different overlay layers of light and shadow, and then merging back down.

Ultimately though in the end I just started painting the coloured lighting on a new layer with no blending mode. I think I watched a tutorial that said If you do it this way you end up appreciating the way you achieved the colouration and lighting, rather than just letting the blending modes help you. I think it was one of the Gnomon DVD's I saw it on.

Would be nice to hear others folks tips on workflows for digital painting if you anyone has any.

Looks good. I also left my sketching skills whither... but I don't mind that much, since zbrush has me happy anyways.

But don't "force" to get your skill up if you're trying to enjoy drawing again. Do whatever you did before you went pro.
