I really, really like the clay render, with the shadows. It doesn't seem like you have much in the way of directional shadows being cast in your beauty pass, which takes a lot of depth out of your image.

I hope you don't mine, but I've overlayed your shadow pass over your beauty pass, with a little futzing (I didn't fix the sky being darkened to the point of blackness), and I think this looks more effective and dramatic:

You've basically finished this - You've done all the hard work, tbh. I think it's a shame that you haven't applied a more dynamic lighting setup to your final peice really make it pop

Go on. Make it pop!

Nice work, but I m missing some depth. I'd ad some orange gradient from left to right too. You could also put in in some nice foreground element by making the shot from inside a landing area (bay ?).

glynnsmith & Matti : I really wanted to create a night time exterior sci fi scene with a really cool atmosphere, which i have done. I do agree with your point with a strong direct light source the image does stand out a lot more. I plan on making 2 more sci fi sets kinda like this one, but with a stronger focus on lighting.

I'm not really digging the gradient overlay look it has.

It would look better in my opinion, if you used lights to give it all those different colors.

This is a great scene with awesome details!!! Sadly, you'd never know it cause they all have the same importance. You'd benefit a lot by separating out these elements a bit. Silhouettes are your friend Giving your viewer a focal point should be your priority to a strong piece.

Couldn't agree more about the orange....it's a nice touch and it draws your eye, but use it to your advantage. Maybe one more ship in the middle? Getting cargo loaded onto it or something? Other than that bravo, this is awesome!

Quick and dirty in photoshop.....

The magic of DoF.
I really like the last pic.

I think it was a id-Software guy who told in an interview that its sometimes hard to do a beautiful scene and hide it in the dark then.
It applies well to this scene too transfered t oDoF effect.

@ TheChan: I see your POV, but i really wanted to do something different and more unique in this environment.

@ thekillermiller: Thanks man ! I like the idea of silhouettes to help create a better focal point. I also have plan on adding some industrial style lighting on the main building to help draw the viewers attention. I was thinking of adding a much larger ship in the middle to help better show off scale in my scene. thanks again for your help !

@michi:be: DOf, great idea ! to you have a link to the read interview ? i really would like to read the whole article

Thanks for all the advice guys ! i should have a new render by the end of this month
