Great piece of work i really like it, the detail is amazing.

There is one thing that bugs me, and that is the ropes on the handle are way to flat, they really need to pop out some more as they are round not flat.

If you make the ropes seem more 3d it will really finish the piece! ^_^

P the Celts captured it from the Vikings and made it their own, or maybe it was specially commissioned by the son of a Viking and a Celt.

it looks awesome. I think you should consider making a spline that follows the shape of the rope and make it maybe with 3 sides then connect it all together and maybe chamfer the edge down. That would make the thing look perfect and give it some real depth! without too many extra polys, I think another 1000 polys is realistic for a game and it wont take nearly that much.

I like it alot, like the others said, the rope is quite flat. Maybe if you had modeled it in high res and generated the normal map from that? It looks as though you used the nvidia plugin in Photoshop or crazybump to try to get a normal out of the rope texture, but it didn't really work.

Looks great. That's a good idea working with 2048 textures. I know my teacher whose company works with Unreal Engine 3 uses 2048 textures exclusively, especially with the material instancing features available in that engine.

Absolutely awesome work man, good job. I have a question though, did you paint the normal maps by hand or created a high poly model as well?

i think it's really obvious that he didn't paint it, because i think you can't paint something like this as a normal by hand.
