Guys when does the voting end? there's a lot of entries!
Thanks for the kind words guys and the crits. A pose like Skwiggles suggested would have worked much better but I just couldn't vision anything else at the time. Polygoblin Your painted texture looks really nice, especially the subtle 'shiny' scales on his skin and the orange straps. I can't believe I put the a-symmerical shoulder spike on the back side, what a numpty! Also I noticed I put 2.988 tris on my final presentation shot and it should be 2.998 lol (facepalm) Skwiggles It's a shame you didn't get the spec map in the final shot it does give it that bit more! The cloth came out nice and the armor going up the spine is great! If there is any crit I could give you for the future is that the fingers seems spindly and kind of bone like, they need fleshing out a tad. Anyway well done everyone, I shall now commence slacking.

I'm still chewing, animations left to vote.
Indeed very cool stuff there in 2D and 3D. Sometimes it's a bit unfair you have to choose 5 best from many good pieces and on the other forum, there are few pieces from which only one is really good. My concern is that many artists especially from the big forums won't rank in the finals, even if their work might be cool enough for that ..but all in all I like the filtering method, it could be a lot uglier^^ Again, the prewar was great fun, thanks for support and crits everyone! I'm thinking about joining the mainbattle, which would mean brutal immersion and forcing improvement of skills in a big scale for me...else the comparison to the great artists out there would be even more frustrating (but allways encouraging, too )how about you guys? I think you should do it, I am. I think the trick is also to limit your design so that you can concentrate on making fewer elements better. I found viewing hundreds of entries there were some common things I was looking for.
For a character eyes are important, otherwise I feel disconnected from the figure. Really complex characters were often hard to tell what was actually going on and all the complex stuff acted like camouflage. When a character was complex but the elements were in harmony then that was nice to view. The characters with 'clever' design that uses the tech available best shone a lot. Expressive use of anatomy for the base of the character looked way more impressive than loads of bells and whistles. When there was much care placed in the foundation you could see that. I know some people hate the idea but I keep reference shots of the pieces I liked most so I can analyze them later and pick out the impressive elements for inspiration, not for copying. I bet if you did the same and we put our folders side by side there would be a lot of similarities, even if we have different taste. I think taste is a minor variation and that appealing work has universally attractive attributes. Being in the contest is an accelerated method for learning and a comp like this offers a special opportunity, ergo everyone has the same brief. It is much different from looking on from the sidelines. I am going to design something that will allow me to concentrate on the base (so more wont mean better), and something I will be able to finish in the time frame. Just some thoughts. |

Thanks for sharing, I made an folder of most pleasing entries, too. Great for Inspiration, to see what can be done in the same boundaries is very helpful.
@polygoblin - I'm glad you like the bad bros, doing some animations would be fun. the texture for the chains of the tank could be a tileable, to run a textureanimation on, the wheels can be two alphatextures on planes, so moving the thing might be possible. Also some parts will need more splits for nice deformation. Rigging could be fun too...But I've looked at those two guys for a long time now, so I need some distance...returning back to them later like a salty dog missing his friends might be possible^^ |
