For the 3D charcter art you create you own concept for it but you base it off the for types of characters (war genral, technomage, shadow and corrupted) and then with in that you pick your race (magic, technology, aliens, machines, and demons)
There a load of descriptions here:
Pre-DW V - Rules

And anyone can join, and no skill required (there is the 4 weeks to do it in though) its all about the fun and learning exsperince.
Oh and crushing the other teams.

High res sculpting is allowed for diffuse map generation only, im guessing that is relating to transferring colour/Material then?
I'm pretty sure no AO is allowed, but it would be a good idea to check the Game Artisans site, so I will do that to get you a definite answer. I know everyone was bitching about it though, and yes I rely heavily on AO and normal maps too.

I hope AO is accepted. I mean, there is little point in using a high detail sculpt for diffuse just to get some materials breakdown, the way I read it I thought the diffuse thing was to have an AO to help out, it still needs to be a manually painted texture without using Normals, and AO is only a helper, it won't "mask" anything if the actual painted texture is crappy.

Would be nice to get clarification on this.

I second that, If AO is definitely not allowed my high poly sculpt will just be for the general shape and the design process I think... although poly-painting on the high poly does have its advantages.

*Edit* Snooping around other forums I'm coming to the conclusion that AO maps will pretty much not be allowed as there is a push for hand painted textures, painting in the shadows and light etc.

Reading the rules and checking out the GArtisans site, nothing but diffuse may be generated from the high res model, that would include AO. You could still (and I would advise it) generate AO from the low res, just like in the olden days. If you want to know how to do that check out Ben Mathis's tutorials on his site, he still has an ol light bake from lopo tute there I think.

Retopoing the low poly from a high res sculp would be much quicker than box or traditional modeling. I think I will box model this one, just for old times sake.

Your back up! Was the forum down yesterday? I couldn't get in

Glad to see some activity here, guess I'll come and join you after all
Been working on some ideas will post some concepts after work...

Quick question: are we posting our WIP's here or creating our own threads?

Yup, the site was down for about a day. Dunno why yet.

It would be great to fight along side you wolfsage

I originally made 3 sub forums before I found out all sites have threads for the separate categories. It makes sense because its quicker to look through a thread than click back and forth between artists. So post your stuff in this sticky.

I would encourage everyone to check out threads on all the other sites as well, there is a lot to see.

Cheers
