Ah good idea, at first I was like...wa? Then I saw the test, and it all came together and I realized the idea could go somewhere!
![]() The only thing I can crit with the work wip still is, I don't think the rocks would be coming around over the supports. The left top side of the braces look like they are buried under sand, I would try to make it a little more like the top right side where it feels like it is embedded in the rocks. It's still early so you might of already noticed this, just figured I say it anyway. Good luck man ![]()

I agree the rocks here are sort of oozing out of the metal frame.
Imagine that the rock has been carved away and afterwards the metal supports have been put in place to give strutural support to the tunnel. That way there's only a couple of tiny rock outcrops peeking into the metal support and the rest is concave behind it. |

yeah, i agree that the extrusion of rocks through the profile of the structures is indeed some what inviable... was my first concern regard doing structure with a layer of rock, but i thought id see how it turned out.
My main focus was to try and stay away from the placing a flat/concave rock layer behind structures since the lack of shadows (from the structures in front of the rocks on to the rocks) within the texture is obviously apparent furthermore to some extent bland... ATM both approaches aren't the best imo... having a rock layer bulging out of the structure which to some extent is as incorrect as with the lack of shadows on a flat layer behind the structures (at least for normal maps alone). - the question is i suppose, which is more believable at a glance? Going to try some stuffs with concave the rocks behind the structures, alas see which is the best. won't affect work flow much, since i render 2 normal maps one for structures and rocks, to aid composition in PS. just my observations on "layered"/ faked depth textures. |
