The Ultimate Crate - Results !

Fellow Artists, let me tell you, judging 32 entries is not easy! Ghost Rider and MutantSpoon did a hell of a job commenting on all the pieces (myself not having the chance to as one of the judges had to cancel last minute). Round of applause for everyone that entered !

As you can see from the results below,Decs came in first ! Congratulations on winning the annual subscription, very well deserved ! Right behind, Generalvivi and Doylle tied for 2nd ! As we said before, if you didn't get 1st, you'll still get an electronic copy of this months 3D Creative Mag. Good job to all that entered Allow for 1-2 weeks to receive e-mail notification of the download !

Legend/Weighting - Concept 20%, Model 35%, Texture 35%, Presenation 10%, Final Score

1st place- General Vivi.
I feel that the concept was great. I saw a few entries that had the "Put something in the box" idea, but vivi pulled it off great. the packaging with the ancient artifact was awesome.
The model was light and did everything it was supposed to to do. Vivi could have saved a few tri's in the packaging material plane, but i could tell Vivi wanted those bumps on the side, and I can relate with that. It was still light enough and looked great.
The Texture was great as well. Great spacing on the sheet. The Egyptian tablet was fairly intricate and yet vivi gave it the Right texel density for it to read well. The only gripe I have with the texture is the "viv" on the one side. Could have been cooler, it looks like it was supposed to be spray paint, but just looks like mouse strokes. But the awsomness of the rest of the piece makes up for it.
I loved the presentation. This was really what put this entry over the top for me. It was very informative and fun to look at. There where a few other entries that might have placed higher, if they only presented their entry better. Great presentation General.
2nd place Stylize
I Love this piece. it was really neck and neck with Viv's. The only reason It did not win is lack of Presentation. Rendering Black backgrounds does not show off your model in the best way. That is all I could find wrong with it, other than the Texture being a tad simple and the Grammatical error written on the top.
But enough about the bad stuff, Let me tell you why this piece rox my sox.
Wonderful concept. very well thought out and great design. I love the chunkyness of it
The modeling is superb. I fell like you could have shaved a few faces off the rounded back section, and you didn't have to bevel the keypad, but that's just me. Great volume and really has a sense of Mass.
Texture. your textures are a bit simple and I feel like you could have pushed them a bit more with a bit more grime and a few distinguishing dings and scratches, but overall, all your maps work together to make it a very stunning work. Great job.
The only thing that you really lacked was the proper presentation. But Iv'e already said that. Great work Stylize.

3rd place Doylle
This entry really caught my eye. First of all the concept was great. Very ambitious and I feel he pulled it off well. not just one crate but three, covered with a ripped tarp! awesome.
The model is great. wonderful polygon distribution and smart modeling.
The texture is awesome I love the style you put into it. I feel you could have pushed the cloth a bit more though, even with out a normal map. But it's great nevertheless and I really like it.
Great presentation. It shows of your model very well and I love the graphical elements, would have been nice to see a wireframe on it though.

My Honorable Mentions go out to:
Captain Cock-. Great model and texture.
Decs- Your entry really caught my eye, great design.
Andrew Jensen- At first glance your entry struck me as just another crate, but I have to give you props on your texture usage and use of alpha. It exhibited a lot of talent and understanding of the medium.
GrooveHolmes- Loads of talent shines in your entry. It's main strength was also a bit of it's drawback, for me anyway, the pure simplicity of it. I absolutely love your normal map and texture work. But the model was ahh.. how should i say it, just a box. hahahah. Not the ultimate crate, but a damn good worker drone crate.

I just want to give a shout to the entire Game-Artist.net community. It's fantastic to see so many cool entries and see what you guys can do with such a simple theme. Tons on enthusiasm as well as eagerness to learn is what makes this Community stand out. And a big thank you to the staff for organizing this as well as letting me judge. There is nothing like friendly competition for Honing our skills as artists. Great work everybody!!
-Josh Singh.

chris89 - 1, 1, 2, 3 - Interesting idea having the fake crate although not as ambitious as it could be, Normal map could use thicker details.

FraGGER - 2, 2, 1, 2 - Textures are kind of burnt out, the corners of the model are very blury

Insulaner - 2, 2, 3, 1 - Clean model and texture, could use better lighting in presentation

CaptainCock - 2, 3, 3, 2 - Specular could use more contrast, normals are good but some scratches and finer details wouldnt hurt

bbox - 3, 2, 2, 2 - Texture is burned out, it's cool it's not the generic 'crate'

titan369 - 2, 1, 1, 2 - Very bright not enough range in value, could use better lighting, wear and tear would be helpful

doylle - 4, 4, 4, 5 - Nice presentation, very nice style, colors are good, dont know how useful the opacity map really was but over all very nice and clean.

Pankake - 1, 3, 2, 3 - Clean, Realistic, could have gotten more mileage out of normal map though.

Kathar - 2, 2, 1, 2 - Texture is burned out in render, Normal map could use thicker highpoly details, specular could use more contrast.

Blunkka - 2, 3, 1, 1 - Needs better lighting to show off shape of model. Normals could use thicker highpoly details, cannot see any specularity.

Rick_D - 2, 1, 1, 1 - Lighting is flat, Normals could have more information to show off scratches and wear and tear.

decs - 5, 5, 5, 5 - Good presentation with lighting, normals work well on model. Concept is nice, maybe make the glow a little more intense.

bighoss - 2, 1, 1, 1 - Render is flat, Parts of texture could be reused for higher resoloution, More details in the texture would be more benificial rather than generic noise texture.

ZachG - 1, 1, 3, 2 - Normals could use more info to show details on t he edge of the wood, too shiny for wood.

andrei313 - 3, 2, 4, 2 - Diffuse map gets really dark and burnt would benifit from a more neutral diffuse map and better lighting to show off normals and specularity.

doom3d - 3, 2, 2, 1 - normals could be more intense, and a better presentations. Some of the elements are outlined in black.

stylize - 3, 3, 4, 5 - Good normal map with texture, Some discoloration in the diffuse would help, overall good model.

PysK0 - 3, 2, 4, 2 - Normal map works well, looks highpoly, could benifit from a more contrasting specular, right now the spec is very even.

Yin - 3, 2, 3, 2 - Red crate could use some color variation.

Chewy Gumball - 2, 1, 2, 2 - Normal is very flat, feels much like a stone crate.

andrewjansen - 2, 2, 2, 4 - Normal could be thicker in areas. Some of the elements modeled in could have been in texture (such as metal clams on corners), the specular should have more contrast. Stickers would be brighter and the would should have dirt at least in it's specular where it would gather in the inside corners.

eagle4 - 2, 1, 1, 1 - Nice that it's not square, the maps could use more contrast such as the diffuse and spec. The bump could also be pushed further.

Meotwister - 2, 2, 2, 3 - Diffuse is very blurry and noisy. Some of the wood normals feel like paper.

Generakvivi - 4, 3, 3, 5 - Nice idea, some color variance would help, its hard to pick apart the different elements.

AimBIZ - 4, 2, 1, 2 - Interesting idea, Textures could use another pass to make the materials clearer as to what they are.

padieg - 2, 1, 1, 2 - Theres texture stretching and not much information in the textures.

Wave if Lag - 2, 1, 1, 1 - Front grate is noisy and hard to read. Paint chipping could use finer details.

longshanks - 2, 1, 2, 3 - Nice cartoon crate, could use some highlights.

grooveholmes - 1, 1, 1, 2 - Texture layout is not efficient, Model is a cube.

Cubik - 4, 4, 5, 4 - Nice colors in diffuse, Could use some details to show how it would open.

Vancorso - 2, 2, 1, 1 - Could use specular, Normals could be thicker.

Spear - 3, 2, 2, 2 - Diffuse is washed out, Specular could use more contrast.
Thanks again to all that participated and 3D Creative Mag for sponsoring the event ! Big thanks again to our Judges too We look forward to next month where we again will have an exciting competition which everybody can take part in !
