100% self illuminated plain render would be better.

I dont know, i disagree with you. Things are never 100% self illuminated ingame (Edit: unless its masked off to be self illuminated ofcourse) and its hard to show how the normal and spec works with the diffuse if its 100% self illuminated.
A 3point light set up with a skylight usually works pretty good and shows off both the normal and spec maps aswell as beeing "honest" about how the diffuse looks.

A skylight will ruin your normal map in 3dsMax. If you want to use (fake) GI, then use a dome of lights. you can make this yourself or use scripts like this one: http://home.wanadoo.nl/r.j.o/skyraider/e-light.htm

I use a skylighet with the multiplier set to ,2. I doesnt do ALOT but i like the subtle touch it adds. I agree that it ruins your normal if you leave it at default tho

Hm, how many triangles are that? You only wrote down polys and I think the rules said triangles.

A tri is considered a single poly, where as a quad is two. Though i could be wrong. Where you counting tris or quads for that poly count you have armanguy?

box looks good, might add a slight emmisive to the blue, also if you wanted you could dirty up the texture a little more, other than that, it looks good, have you tried the xnormal viewer, pretty nice model viewer.
