Chewy Gumball

I was thinking that a more futuristic crate would look cool, so I didn't go with a normal box shape. I plan to make it have glowing parts cause I like glowing things.
Here is my base model, its 164 tris.

Here is my high poly one.

This is my first time trying to use the rtt normal map way so I tried to keep it simple. I think it turned out quite well actualy.

The texture will be the hard part, I haven't made that many, but so far its going well. Comments, crits, and cakes are welcome.

For a first normal map it looks good. As you said.. it is a simple model and the highpoly looks more like a little more detailed lowpoly probably because of the hard edges. I'm waiting to see where you take this with the texture.
Good start though, I think everybody likes glowing things

Ya, I don't really know how to do those scratches and stuff people do without completely destroying my computer from too many polygons. I did put a bump map on parts of the high poly model though, and as I found out by accident, it gets made into the normal map too. The bump map isn't in the picture I put up there though.

Well, I'm working on the textures and this is what I have so far. I think I will change the end colour. Green just doesn't look as good as I hoped it would.
Diffuse:
Normal:
Spec:
and Glow:
Right now the normal map makes it look more like concrete than metal so I think I will be redoing the bumpy parts. I also added some stuff to the high poly model and rounded the edges like you said. Max doesn't like to render nicely so I get weird circle indents all over the place (normal rendering not when baking).

Yes, the bumps are too strong on the normal map. You should add only scratches (2 pixel lines or something like that). I like what you did with the diffuse, only you are right about the green. It looks boring and not really interesting. Try some dark red (cherry) and maybe some yellow glow... or I don't know... maybe you already have something better in mind

I think I'm pretty much done. Just getting render settings right for a pretty render. I did make it a dark red, but its much darker than cherry.

I fiddled with the normal, and I think it looks much better:
Here's the specular:
and a beauty render:
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to use the reflections. Am I only supposed to use the maps used in the contest for the beauty render? I think I will put a light above it all just so I get some darker shadows on the ground. Make it so it doesn't look like it's floating. Also, the normal map doesn't really show up that much... What could be causing that?
