Ok well heres my entry, hand textured, and I stuck with a boring simple cube shape (ie 12 polys)
![]() And the colour, normal and specular (links as I used 1024 for all) Colour: http://www.jeffgreen.f2s.com/CrateCompetitionEntry/Diff.jpg Normal: http://www.jeffgreen.f2s.com/CrateCompetitionEntry/Norm.jpg Specularity: http://www.jeffgreen.f2s.com/CrateCompetitionEntry/Spec.jpg Quite simle but I tryed to add a little humour... anyway :-P Hope you guys like it, if you dont then feel free to crit. Yeah, you could probably knock up a high poly for this in a few minutes, that normal map has a horrible ammount of noise which doesn't really provide much depth, 'hand textured' as in hand painted? Looks quite photosourced, never the less, it's very 'cratey'

The problem in this case is that you are trying to make a 90 degrees angle from the normal map at the extrusion in the middle. Nobody can make that look real with a normal map, especially since the extrusion has a lot of depth. You should use the extra polys to make that and use the normal map for the holes between the wood plates, and other small stuff like scratches, a little sign made with paint... maybe some text...
