competition #16 - Sefiroth

This is my concept. The idea is to have a giant fire bug that cant pass the doorway of a temple like thingy in some godforsaken forest, so you have to beat it if you want to continue. I like rpg's so this will be a RPG boss pure in its kind. Not just trying to bash his brains out it, but find its weak spot and work your way around that.

Starship troopers anybody? =P
Sorry to sound like an arse, but i'm super picky when it comes to originality and now days it's a bit hard to make something original because in some way or another, every creature we make it just like another creature out there that has already been made that someone will recognize.

However, what I think makes something original now days is by how much it is really noticed. A fire bug is pretty well known from the movie StarShip Troopers, and i'm pretty sure it has been in a few RPG games of the past, however don't quote me on that, I can't be certain.

When I saw this scene, I was just instantly reminded of the StarShip troopers movie and game, that's all, and I believe that others might too.

Here is a render shot of the bug:

And here is a video of it in game (only because I couldn't find a good image):

Perhaps stay with the whole fire idea, but change the creature design to something more unique and interesting...

Dude. Shut up. That's not helpful in the slightest. You're not a designer, or his boss. What right do you have to tell him, or anyone if their idea is good or not?

Go nuts man! I'm looking forward to mesh piccys

I wasnt going for the originality anyway. But seeing that starship troopers used the same beetle as reference for there tanker as I did for my fire bug kind of sucks big time. Its already to far evolved to go back with the time I have left, should have sticked with my first idea, but to late for that...
Still going to continue. These days everything has huge polycounts and massive textures, so this is a bit of a new thing and fun to do.

Can you post some of your models in progress? I would like to see, This is a good concept. ST didn't invent giant bugs, just did em well.

Excuse me?
I may not be the designer of this specific concept or any other concepts or work on this forum, but competition or no competition, I was simply pointing out that the idea already existed, not saying "your idea sucks, don't do it for the love of god".

This forum is not a place to argue who is wrong or right, it's a place to share ideas, opinions and input, if you do not like what I have to say, then object in a more friendly manner, because as far as I know, your response on any other forum would get you banned, so calm down and don't take things so personally, especially when they have nothing to do with you.

Now onto the actual topic creator, I apologize if my post upset you in the same way that it has upset Adamtehgreat, I am only trying to help and I treat this competition in a non competitive way, I do have my own quick entry for the sake of being involved, but I like looking at other peoples ideas and helping them out, my intention is not to put people down or demoralize anybody, but to be informative and help them.
I hope that you can understand that and everyone else on this forum can as well.

The reason I pointed out that the fire beetle was already in use is because of the originality factor. If you wanted to make it original, the beetle could easily be changed to anything else such as another type of beetle, but when trying to create something, especially for games, it's always best to do research to see if your work is similar to anything else out there.

A beetle is not a very hard creature to create, so you could easily swap it for something else if you wanted, heck, you could make it a beetle cross rabbit if you really wanted to, and then it would be original.
Since you do like the beetle concept, perhaps you could do research on different types of beetles, maybe do a Rhinosaurus beetle that spews out flames instead.

Or a nasty looking scarab beetle (which I believed was used to put together the idea of the Chimeric creature from "The Relic".

whatever you decide is up to you, but this is just my input from a design point of view.

Natace, you dont have to apologize, you are right and please dont stop giving C&C. Every input is welcome and can be thought over. THe beetle is nearly finished I hope to get a bit of time today, get it done and I will post it. Meanwhile I can think it over and if I have some time left change it with something else.

ok, this where I am so far, still a lot to do. 2200 polys and still 256*256 and a 64*64 map left so a lot room to improve and finish what I already have.

getting closer to the finish. Still a few 100 polys ( need to count with the double sided faces etc.) and 2 64² maps left. Need to think how to spend them. Some more nature, some damage,...

The first is a (3D)render. Its no viewport grab and thats because when using jpg or bmp you wont get transparency in high quality render in Maya. So this is a basic software render with a ambient set up to get an overall equal lighting.
I dont know anything about engines for public use but I hope to find something to get a valid final image.

The second one is done with mental ray and for fun. not allowed but looks way better ofcourse.

I wont be able to work on it for a few days, lets hope I can get it finished in time.
