Competition #16 - JimmY-DigitaL

Made a concept for the boss monster. I want to go with a bit of stylized / cartoony / fantasy theme here, aimed maybe more at younger gamers. Anyway, the boss:

Still thinking what I want to do with the enviroment.

The environment might be a wee bit tricky with just a 512x512 environment map, but I was thinking you should put it in a Jousting arena.

It would take maybe 200-300 polys to make a nice looking joust arena, and you could use a small texture map to use as a tile texture to do the cobble stone bricks of the walls.
Then you could use one tile-able texture for the grass, and put detail in polys for where the jousting lines would be (the path in which the horses travel up) where you could use a small dirt tile texture with an alpha map applied so it's kinda like a decal on your grass.

looks sick, but rid yourself of the monotone ultramarine. 1500s style clothing is a perfect excuse to indulge in extravagant campy details

edit: oh and I'd recommend getting rid of the graecian style crest too, go for something more like a large soft plumage, more germanic or middle ages italian, to match the rest of the guy's appearance.

edit: fuck

Natace:
That was my initial idea too, imo it would be the obvious environment to go with, so I decided I didn't want that. I made three thumbnails for environments, I'm thinking of going with the tower. The boss monster ofcourse holds a princess captive that needs saving.

Harry:
Thanks! I agree the clothing can be loads more interesting, so I'll be working on that. Thanks for linking the reference! I might change the clothing style depending on the story and environment I'm going with. You'll have to excuse me though, what do you mean with your second suggestion? Isn't a crest a shield? I'm a bit confused .

With the tower and the mountain I could go with a some sort of evil dark knight theme, the king's hall type environment would fit better with a king or royal guard theme. Any suggestions? Thanks

An obvious environment doesn't make it cliche'd or bad.

I think the whole tower environment is far more overused than you think . And as a gamer, I would find that a bit silly to be fighting a knight on a horse on the top of a tower...I would expect it to be on some sortof lower plane area like the jousting arena, an open field, a small road in between two cliffs and so on.

Some older popular games that used the tower idea are: Super mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of time, Kirby's dream land (gameboy version), Bomberman 64, and...the list goes on really, I just got out of bed so the alzheimers hasn't cleared away yet :P.

New update on the rider, a bit more classy and armored and the colors work better imo. I wont be redrawing the mount, I'll adjust the coloring to the rider's outfit as Im already spending quite some time on concepting and still need to figure out an environment.

You're right about the tower concept, Natace. I can't think of the same amount of ways to make a jousting arena visually appealing compared to the tower scene though. So I'm gonna rethink all of it probably, could still use suggestions on this part.

It's a tricky one, perhaps you may be able to go with a more surreal environment? Maybe it could be like a lolly land or something equally stupid :P

I dunno, I think the Jousting arena is your best bet thus far.
Another one would be inside of some stables....It's a tough one to figure out really :P

To be honest I like the first concept more. He looks so cute, and absolutely not like a big and mean boss, but that makes it very interesting as well

The blue color looks good to me. I don't see any problems with it.

For the environment I would rather see something without stairs, because like Natace already mentioned: How did he and his horse came up there?

Maybe you can do something with a castle. Not very original, but you can make it original with the cartoon style you use. (Bend towers and walls, etc)

Crest is the plumage on the helmet Jimbo, can also refer to the upper part of the coat of arms.

I reckon the new suit looks way more central european, so if thats what you're going for then you've pulled a sick one. I personally like the way it looks better, and I think it will come up as a much more interesting model/texture than the first concept.

BTW seeing as he's mounted, you could try some jousting style armour (if you like, i know a bunch of people like having assymetrical pauldrons)

See here there's one particularly epic pauldron for the joust.

http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/asset...ies_helmet.JPG

This kind of helmet was also popular in jousts because it gave the best protection at the cost of some visibility, they'd tilt their head down while charging and straighten it up before impact. Of course these were almost strictly sporting helmets.

Feel free to discard any of this info, just letting you know that you have some options that are within historical influence.

As for the lair, you could try a pavillion fenced off and covered in pennants or something

I wasn't saying the horse couldn't travel up stairs, because horses can, but a castle top is just a bit overdone that's all.

Personally, I also liked the blue looking outfit, the grey stuff just looks too boring and bland and it's so typical.
The brighter colours give the boss a contrast, he's an evil boss, but he looks so friendly.
Just think about the Clown boss in Dead Rising, he was all colourful, but a psycho with twin mini chain saws :P

If you really wanted to be whacky, you could give him santa claus colours of red and white :P and put little fluffy things around him like a santa suit/armor, since it IS just about christmas time and all :P
Just a crazy suggestion :P

When will we see some renders?
