Competition #14 - NuclearPeanut

'lo everyone. A friend pointed me to this contest, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I've decided to go with a flea, since I haven't seen anyone else doing one yet. Not so sure about the "battlefield role" just yet, but it'll probably end up being a scout or something else that makes use of the jumping ability.

anyway, here's what I've got do far: [982/1000 tris]

That's awesome, imo you should make him a paratrooper, jumping over the battlefield and landing behind enemy lines

Minor update: I liked the idea of a paratrooper so I decided to try it out and also rendered a wireframe.

Just the body is 972 tris, but I'm keeping everything in quads for the moment as I find them easier to work with.

Total it all comes out to 998 tris when the 'chute is added.

I think I might remove a bit of detail on the legs and use the saved faces to add accessories of some sort. probably a weapon.
Also, I think it looks good as a paratrooper, so thanks for the idea Harry!

I'm just wondering if the lines connecting the chute and the backpack are faces cuz iirc lines don't show up in a realtime engine. Also the chute might be a bit to low poly.

The model looks great btw. I like the pin on the helmet. It makes it look like a German soldier (from the first and second world war).

I really like this idea! I agree with paperclip that the chute needs more polys. Are you going to go with a modern style, or a classic style?

@Paperclip: The lines are in face the edges of a plane, i just rendered without them because it doesn't look as good and they will be alpha mapped to be just lines in the end anyway.
Though at that point would it really matter? Could I get away without them at all?

@Pearson: The chute will likely be somewhere in between, but probably with a look more similar to the "classic" example you linked to.

I'll post a new and improved version later today.

you cant get away with out strings, just do them like the classic parachute and have a bunch of black lines

Ok I lied, its technically "tomorrow" now but whatever.

Didnt get much in today, took a few loops from the legs and used the extra faces to round out the chute and experiment with a weapon. I'll probably round out the chute some more or add some faces hanging down or something.

Total without the weapon is down to 914 tris, so I've got plenty to work with for details and accessories now.

Not sure what I want to do with a weapon, mostly because I'm not sure how to pose the legs and still have them look good, and it seems a bit silly to paratroop [that's not a word...] somewhere without a weapon of some sort.

Hey bud i like the model so far but I just want to say, i feel like his center of balance is off, feels like that parachute should be attached near the top of the back, just behind the head and above the legs. its looking cool though and i was going to comment on the weapon placement but I'm not sure what kind of weapon it is yet, what are you going for?

Ahopps01: Now that you mention it I do see what you mean about the balance, I'll see what I can do to make that look a bit better. As far as the weapon goes, what I have in the picture was intended to be a chainsaw of some kind but that was really just an experiment, so the placement is nowhere near final. As a matter of fact, I'm probably going to be replacing it with something new anyway. As awesome as chainsaws are, I'm not sure I could make it fit well with what I have so far. More experimenting is required.
