Competition #14 - Dayeth

Hey all, this is my first competition here, very much looking forward to it.

My creation is based on the Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis)


My concept is a Desert Scorpion Sniper



Although I might change certain elements of the body, particulary the legs and stinger to feel more mechanical like to fit with the binocular-eyes and sniper barrell, I want to stick to the colour scheme of the Scorpion I have chosen to keep its identity.

Good imagination, I really like your concept, really a nice start, keep that up !
Other than that, there is one thing I don't like in your concept, it's the medals, I don't think that bring really something to your model. It's a bit useless and don't look very nice in my opinion, the rest is very cool !

Watch out ! Sniper !

Looks interesting. I'd say the same as Baida, may be you don't need those medals.
If you insist on putting them, I don't think they should be around the weapon, may be move to the chest part so when he kinda stand up we can see them?

Cool, thanks for the input, just a spur of the moment idea I slapped on, I'll probably just get the model done then play around a bit with the medals, see what works!

Finished the mesh, comes in at 996 tri's. Probably going to Unwrap it this evening and perhaps take it into ZBrush.

UVW map finally done, have barely taken my eyes off the screen for hours painstakingly making them up, managed to develop a good technique going for getting them how I wanted though, I'm happy!

I've made the leg co-ordinates symmetrical, but the pinsers individual.

I've taken my low poly Scorp into ZBrush and baked the new high poly version onto the low one to produce a normal map with the detail on the back and some rough scaley textures on the tail and other places.

I love your concept man, it made me smile. At the moment I actually prefer your low res to your high res, because of the cartoonyness (very TF2), and I think if you lose that you're going to risk it looking a bit silly with binoculars and whatnot. Nice UV layout too.

Ok, here is my normal and diffuse maps.





Then when I put everything together this is what I've got so far.



I'm happy with it but any constructive criticsm or comments are MORE than welcome as this is my first competition and I'd like to push myself a bit further than where I'd usually stop and call it complete. Cheers!
