Competition #14 - LRS3d

After a little thought and looking at pics of bugs I decided on the Australian Redback Spider.

The pattern on the youngsters back reminded me of the geneva redCross, so my spider is a medic.

rough sketch, has a pack on its underside, although the pack may end up on its back.
For the military look I added a helmet, and poly buget allowing, some gogles on the helmet. I plan to make the "redback" on the tail more "redcross" like.
the spiders body is Black, and may add a white outline to the cross.

Nice man, I think it would be awesome if you could incorporate the red cross in a natural/organic way.... keep it up!

start modeling

Made a start on the body, there are leg nubs where the legs will attach.
The back bulb could do with some more smoothing (extra polys).

faces is at 194, so there is still plenty to play with.

Legs

Worked on the legs, the four inner legs are smaller than the front and back legs.
I looked at a few reference pis and there seems to be a wide variety of sizes, on some the first and second pairs are similar lengths, but I am going with my original reference.

I smoothed the bulb on the body, still only 490 tris.

Also re shaped the head a little.

reference

Reference pics

the texture will be loosely based on the larger image, I haven't seen white on a redback before and not been able to verify its authenticity, but it suits my plan for her Texture.
(only female spiders have markings)

UVs

Started UVs, the gap is for the pack and helmet, I still may need to move things around tho.

I added curves to the front and back legs.

comments welcome, this is my second non-human model.

I really like this one! And you have done a tremendous job with the poly management. Over 500 polys left and yet your model looks great. Very impressive.

Thanyou guys for the kind comments,

Started rough texture, needed a tweek on the helmet UV ( the circle of the cross was not round).

For the texture I tried white around the cross on the tail but did not like the way it looked. The first cross I tried was straight and did not look organic . I roughed up the edges and let there be a little bleed on the top, It looks more organic now.

the first aid box needs handles and a latch. Still deciding where to go with them.
I am at 766 Tris so I should probably model them. I also need to do something with the straps on the bedroll. (blankets to wrap the injured).
I also chose to do a firstaid box as it was easier to "read" in gameplay as a medical item. I thought a backpak was a little too generically army.

I need to do a tute on normal mapping, I know what they are, just dont know how to make them. I also need to learn Z-Brush too. I have been concentrating mainly on learning 3dMax.

Adding a side view ,
the eyes will have goggles in the texture and this is only a roughed tex for placement.
