Competition #14 - Cographicz

I saw this competition on cgsociety and decided to test my skills.

i will be doing a low poly colony of cockroaches\

Cockroaches (or simply "roaches") are insects of the order Blattaria. This name derives from the Latin word for "cockroach", blatta.

i havent seen many cockroaches in this competition so this should be cool. i think you are wasting alot of tris all over the place here though, and i think you should go back and concept ideas to really figure out where you will need more detail and where you can get away with saving tris. it is really important to think about edge flow. every edge should have a purpose and in your model, alot of these edges are not doing anything. im attaching a paintover of what i mean, the same basic build of what you have here but with much more purpose in the position of edge loops and only about 40 tris (we still have 960 left!!). that means you will have plenty of tris to form the legs and antennae, to get into high detail with the head, and we can even get away with building all kinds of gadgets or adding more edge loops around the body to smooth him out. lets see some concepts first, a cockroach could be alot of really fun things

Concept

I have worked alot of Tri's out (wireframe will be up shortly) im under 700 tri's now and I have put more detail on legs and head. With the free tri's I plan on making a spiked body armor (mainly textured) on the back of the rouch and from the jaws of the roach I will be making two crazy looking saws. I say crazy looking because tri's make some weird shapes. Concept for saws and body armor will be posted at the same time as fireframe of roach body.

Armored Roach Update

I changed the style alittle from the concept to use some of my unwanted tris. The spiked leg brace is not done yet but I still have over 100 tris left to use so I am thinking about mounting some type of missile launcher on his back. I will be texturing next and I will be using a rusted look for all the metal, to make the roach and the metal armor look alittle more real.

Note: the first 3 renders on the left side are angled shots not side.

I will be reposting the wireframes because the image is to small to see all the wireframes making some tris look like quads.
