Competition #14 - Z-trooper

I'm back for this one as well.. have drawn up a few concepts.. Originally I wanted to do a dung beetle pushing artillery rounds around. But seeing as several other people were into beetles as well I decided to rethink that plan a bit.

Then I had a glorious plan of doing a veteran flamethrower ant cartoon thing.. complete with cigar in his mouth, a lighter in one of his hands.. gas tanks and what not.. only to find myself running out of triangles before I ever got started modeling.

Now on to what I'm going for at this point... Front line infantry - no fancy bomber or ninja master, just a plain footsoldier. What better to represent this than a ant?
I wanted to keep it in a WW2 russian rifleman style. 3 hands on his rifle (trigger, handguard and one ready to load ) the last one will be throwing a grenade.

Here is a WIP of what I'm going for. 886 triangles at this point - and a hell of a lot of work still needed!

Looks cool. Although you might wanna do a bit on the joints of the legs/arms. Make them look a bit more bug like. Eg:

But very cool concept and its looking really good so far

thanks and of course I will be doing something more fancy with the limbs.. for now I'm making a lot of placeholder stuff so I'm sure I wont step over the limit. limbs will be the biggest challange I reckon.

Thanks anyways

Updated a bit..

998 triangles all equipment included. Not sure this will be my entry as I have a few more ideas in mind that I want to try out.. totally different styles and era (both ends).
Non the less I will unwrap this one to see how it looks with a basic skin on.

Reminds me a bit of those ants in one of the donald duck cartoons. Really nice work so far.

I like the style it reminds me some animated cartoon as Antz, even if it 's not really the same.
Otherwise, I would see your ant with a backpack instead of this "briefcase".

It would increase the feeling of a soldier in my opinion.
By the way, I found a cool concept on google image, you have perhaps/surely saw that one
But perhaps that could give you some inspiration.

Hehe, its not a briefcase :P is an ammobox.. I actually tried making a backpack or radio but it didnt look right without some kind of straps over the shoulders or such.. and tbh such straps take up quite a few triangles when you dont want them floating in free space.. made that ammobox because I had a few triangles left and.

Yes, I see, it's quite hard to deal with the polycount, sorry for the briefcase but that's what I had in mind when I saw it, though I'm sure It'll look as it when that'll be textured

Good luck !

Hehe, thanks.. not sure if I want it there as I want my final scene to be in "motion" - then the static ammobox wouldnt fit that good. After all I just made it in 20 sec's after being frustrated over I couldnt do a proper backpack/radio.. also tried making a little belt and "coat" at a point, but gave up again due to the tri count.. not that I'm complaining - its really fun trying to get as much as you want into a model with such a strict limit.
