ARMADA - Results!!

Another competition has come to an end, and we are happy to announce the winners. Your mission was to create two spacecrafts, one mothership and a sistership. A task that was not easy. As the results below will show you, game-artist.net would like to congratulate in3d with his outstanding submission, and his first place in the ARMADA competition. The first runner op is Daelon, closely followed by Awiz. Congratulations!

nataska: Interesting concept on this one. Modeling is basic and the colors are a bit strange. I don't feel like there is an Armada. This how ever could make an interesting Kamikaze fighter ship coming from a bigger mothership thou….

Atius: Good modeling, nice feel. Adding greater detail and speculars to the maps will make a big difference in this one. Possibly add depth of feel and motion blur to the smaller ships and it will look good.

nistrum: Has a painted feel, doesn't have a 3d feel. The models are basic, as are the textures. A good quick sketch start.

Z-trooper: It's a good start on modeling, but feels unfinished. The image and textures are too dark to make out.

ColdRolled: A little to literal I think for a spaceship design. I can see where taking certain lines and elements of animals would turn a mechanical structure more organic. A little more exploration on this concept could prove successful.

Awiz: nice model and texturing style, real Anime, which is nice. Also good work on creating a UI

in3d: At first glance I felt like I was in the scene, it has great depth and fantastic texture and modeling technique. It's something I'd expect to see in a StarWars concept and sketching book.

fabiodan: good modeling, and design. I think that more time spent on textures and creating thrust effects can turn this one into a good image

nataska: The design is the most interesting thing about this piece, although you could've pushed alot further. I think you wasted alot of triangles, that you could've used to add more details. The texture is realy lacking solid material definition.

Atius: The design and model look quite good, and the parts of the texture that have details on them look nice to, but there is alot of undetailed diffuse map there to, which is minus imo.

nistrum: The HMS Galaxy shape I like most about this piece. I'm missing propper edgeloops though, a i think you could clean alot of triangles on the Bastion. I'm missing a solid materail definition on both models, but the coherent style makes up for that.

Z-trooper: Concept and models are good imo. With the texture things started to go a bit downhill though. Everything is very dark, and there's hardly any material definition, a bit of a shame if you ask me. And as you stated yourself, the final render is very unclear.

ColdRolled: As with many other entries, the basic idea is present, and works well. I like the sea creature idea for the mother ship and fighter. Unfortunately the execution was a but messy. There are no solid edgeloops like one would expect in an organic shape like this, and the fact that you used large parts of the texture on both the models says enough i think.

Awiz: The concept could use a bit more work i think. The fighter is missing something that would make the ship look more unique. The texture is coherent, but it's missing material definition. I noticed there's a specular map present, but it doesn't realy show on your model unfortunately...

in3d: If I look at the beauty render then I must say that it looks more like a concept drawing from some 2D artist, rather than a 7k triangle spaceship. Pure eyecandy. The design, the texture, final image, it has all been well planned and exectured. No crits...

fabiodan: The concept is there, and you have some interesting shapes/lines imo. But the modeling is a bit of a letdown. The body is way to "2d" for something like this. The texture is missing some good material definition too.

But there is more. We still have to hand out our Best Crit award. We went through all the post carefully, and decided that Z-Trooper earns the best crit award. With Myles closely behind and Masakari & Xoliul not too far after that.

And finally, I would like to thank the sponsors of this competition. Alienware, Area, 3dWorld Magazine and cgTextures. Special thanks to Gabriel Gonzalez from Alienware for helping us out with the judging!

Note to all contestants: can you please PM me your full name and valid home adress, so that we can send the T-shirts and prizes

I know my final piece sucked, but I no texture guy and my rendering understanding is almost equal to 0.

I must admit that I am a bit surprised about winning the best crit award as I have been pretty inactive in the competition (and commenting) from time to time. In my honest opinion that award should have gone to requiem2d, all of his advice was very constructive and helpful - not only for me, but for pretty much every post I saw from him, but I guess a judge couldnt get any awards.

Congrats to the winner, runner up and 3rd place kind of bummed out about entering what I did tbh, but I learned a lot, and thats all I could hope for.
I'll be there again next time
