Competition #13 - ivy
so i was thinking about a spaceship design and it didn't make much sense to me that they would look to different from modern aircraft/vehicles. mainly because there based on ergonomics. my plan is to use a harrier jet as a starting point for my fighter ship, and a refuel plain as my support. sounds like a heavy brief hehe but i plan to have some fun with this one to and hopefully learn something along the way.
here is my start ![]() ![]() Last edited by ivy; 26-02-2008 at 03:59 PM. |

Well, there are lots of spaceships and fighters with wings and that look like planes, but the thing is... you don't need that stuff in space. You only need it on Earth because of gravity and atmosphere. Without them, you can fly a brick if you want to, all maneuvering is done with engines, thrusters, side and retro-thrusters, stuff like that.

i understand all that, i just dowt that if we built spaceships we would abandon all designs since 1903 and make bricks. also id want my ship to be able to land without burning up. its spozed to be a compressed air (for space) and jet engined space fighter. im not going for realism, thats just my take on design.
anyway would really like to know what everyone thinks of the model so far, this is the first time iv ever done something like this. Last edited by ivy; 26-02-2008 at 06:03 PM. |

At first i was like "wtf, this ain't no spaceship yo," then i realize, wow, why do spaceships HAVE to look sci-fi.
I mean, you swear tie fighters are the future! and who wouldn't want to fly a SPACE JET. think about it, SPACE JET. its a freaking jet that flys in space! And before you go uhhhh jets don't work in space, its the future, its powered by gravity water wheels for all i know. Long story short, a realistic approach to space fighters makes more sense then a Giant planet sized cannon monster. That being said, needs more fins. |

Looks like Harrier. Just wanted to note a flaw in your reasoning. Everything enetering Earths atmosphere will start to heat up and im specificly thinking that those sidewinders and whatnots wouldnt make it through a landing from space onto the ground and so wouldnt the spacecraft itself. But I like the idea of a spacecarrier launching fighters designed for dogfights within a planets atmosphere, I know ive sort of had that idea my self. But I think you should make it look more modern considering the Harrier is from the 80's or close to it.

Well, what you have now is a harier, nothing less, nothing more, so i'm not sure what you expect us to say. If you plan to simply add/tune stuff, and say it's a spacecraft, then this will result in disqualification, which i'm sure you can understand. If you want to use the harrier design lines for your own custom designed spacecraf, then that would be brilliant.
Also, please post wireframes of your models, thanks ![]() Good luck ![]() |

ya dont worry, it will look space worthy hehe. i think iv been saying this is the wrong way all along, i think jets look badass so i wanted to make a ship base on one hehe. i wanted a kinda space cowboy look to it. modeling HUGE cannons ect hehe.
anyway here is my wireframe. ![]() |
