Competition #13 - Coridium

Hi all,

This is my first post in this forum, So firstly I would like to say hello!

I have been wanting to post some stuff here for a while but never quite got round to it, so what better way to start then with a competition, lol.

I've been impressed with what I have seen posted so far, so hope i dont let the side down.

So here is a very quick concept for the mothership that I done over my lunch, its kinda inspired by lots of different things but mainly, starwars, Final Fantasy and samurai armor. Its not how I want it to be yet, so I will update it hopefully soon.

Look forward to your comments and criticisms.

Chris

I really like the decoration on the front, sort of modernised elaborate designs you'd find on antique furniture/ statues etc. A definite Final Fantasy influence there :P. Would look sweet all textured up nicely. In terms of design I feel like the end sort of ends abruptly, or could be developed more to balance out with the front. Also with that flat middle section ( can't really tell if you have any plans for the underside of that with this sketch ) the silhouette might be a bit boring from the middle through to the back.
Do you have some sketches of other ideas or fighters ?

Hi Unsteadyteddy,

I totally agree with you, the shape is boring from the middle to the end. It is something that I defiantly planned to work on. I think that i'll introduce some protruding shapes to help make the silhouette stronger.

The underside is where the fighters will be stored, I think that I'm going to hang them there with maybe spaces for 4 or 5.

Cheers for the comments
Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to GA,

Love the design work, it definitely breaks up the otherwise semi-monotome shape at the back. It also conveys the feeling of peace, i.e. an unarmed ship of the "Alliance". By continuing to build on the sacredness or mystique, I think you will put yourself in a great position for the top. I would never give the ship a description or class, leave it to our imagination and curiosity what goes on in inside

Cheers

It looks very calm and peaceful.

I would name it either "Serenity" or "Green Peace" (j/k)

I like the symbols and marks you have on there. It reminds me of Viking "art".

(examples)

I dont want to spam your thread, but you could try googling "viking art" or something.

It especially reminded me of some "art" I have seen been carved into wood, or maybe a ship.
You could always give it a Viking name if you chose to, Thor is very popular.
(If you ever decided to follow up on the Viking stuff let me know, as a dane I am quite familiar with the myths, stories and gods)

Hi,

requiem2d: Thanks for your comments, I'm not sure what direction to go with it yet. I guess that it will adapt and change throughout the design process, but your comments have got me thinking.

Z-trooper: Thanks for the reference. I like the viking style, I was thinking celtic (since I'm a scot) or art nouveau maybe, but I think i'll add viking to that research list too, and see what comes out of it, maybe a mix of the three.

DeathChronx: Thanks!

Cheers
Chris

very nice concept. wish i posessed your drawing skill :P i love the decals... i think it has an air of manace about it though. almost like woad patterns.. doubtless the current patters give a sence of ease.. but im sure with a little alteration the mood could be different. perhapse your other ship could be some sort of escort.. with slightly less amiable intent. :P

on the other note.. it reminds me of a cross between the Halo dropships and the preditor ships in the nwe AVP2 film nice workl look forwards to some progress

I can't explain why, but I get a real Dune or Necromonger (Chronicles of Riddick) vibe from it... which I think is awesome. There's something almost religious or mystical about forms like this one which can be hard to bring to a spaceship, but when it works it can be really intriguing.

Also a fighter/drone deployment bay on the underside could semi-justify the big flat carapace on the top if that's important to you. I mean it's kind of like an insect with a soft underbelly, Except in this case the top would be armored and the underside would be spewing forth a stream of deadly fighters, so neither side would be vulnerable.

anyway just my thoughts on a promising concept.. good luck with it.

Hey!
I really love the desighn,
Maybe you could allow for the front cockpit ship bit to fit into the back cargo looking area. Just soo there is a obvious bond between the two ship pieces because they almost look seperate. I would also suggest not to put any engines onto the back of the ship, leaving the engines to the front part. But really this is a really cool piece.

Keep it up!
