Ok - I've updated the specular/spec color following the steps you've outlined. The result is pretty good in max.

Does anyone have links to good spec mapping tutorials, that's something I've found a little lacking - For example, why did you need to alter the hue, etc. See I don't understand the 'why' behind it, except that dark is matte and white is shiny.

Also the render still looking a little washed out it max, but I'll keep messing with the shader and lights to see if I can get a better result. If anyone has insight here to share, it'd be appreciated! Thanks!

The colour on your spec c olour map is the colour that will be reflected,

ie.

A inverted/slightly desurated hue will give off a matte specular. A non-inverted hue will give off the same colour in the specular as the diffuse.

Cheerio
