Competition #13 - pantsburgh
I don't feel very confident at designing stuff on my own, so I stole most of the design from this concept drawing (very definitely not mine):
![]() And here's my general concept: ![]() The one on top is a front view of the mommyship, if you couldn't figure that out. Bottom is the side view of the fighter (it's pointing to the left, the blades point forward). Also, I'm thinking I want my dudes shooting at stuff in the beauty render. If anyone wants to be my arch enemy let me know.

I played with the fighter a bit, I think this is more or less the design I'm gonna stick with. The other 2 drawings are the ways I'm contemplating it docking with the mommyship, and right now I'm leaning toward the top one, because I think the animation would look cooler in practice.

So, I was reading up on some of the stuff the US military is working on - particularly un-manned stuff, and I decided to change my general concept a little bit. These previously fighters are now going to be un-manned drones. Instead of creating a "mothership", I'll be making a heavy fighter, which will carry 2-4 of these drones with it.
Took it into 3d (still a concept, however). Only change was to make the top gray thing into a gun. It hasn't been optimized yet, but this is roughly the poly density I'll be leaving it at. The insets in the blades will be optimized out and put into a normal map, but they're important to the look for a concept I think. ![]()

Aaand, a couple 3d sketches for the heavy fighter. I think I'll start on it fresh tomorrow and make a couple more, see if I can find something I like more.
The drones kinda pop out the back like chaff or flares on modern jets, then fly around and shoot stuff I guess. ![]() ![]() Edit: Yeeaaah, they look kinda like the Skaarj space fighters in UT 2k4. I realized that after I made them, but I think mine look better.

That said, I could just name the ship "Kamikaze". ![]()

I know wings arnt usefull for space crafts, but I still add intentionally to:
- Give resemblance to aircrafts which is some of the closest relatives they have in my book - Be able to land on planets with atmospheres, like earth. (Even the space shuttle has wings for re-entry) So they are legit in my book. Keep it up mr. Pants ![]()

Ok - here's my thoughts on wings: You can use the ship for atmospheric travel also (though realistically most sci fi wings would be horrible at flying), but they also add interesting visual detail and ornament to the piece. You can always find some excuse to cram some bit of technology in them - check out a Star Wars cross section sometime, those ships are totally impractical IRL, but they always find some way to make every inch of them useful. Plus you can say that your race favors this kind of stylistic element.
